Italian sprinter Danilo Napolitano got the perfect birthday present when he outsprinted Tom Boonen for the first time in his career, winning stage five of the Tour of Qatar.

The Lampre rider beat yesterday's stage victor Alberto Loddo (Tinkoff Credit Systems) and Boonen to the line at the Al Khor Corniche, with Francesco Chicchi (Liquigas), Nicolai Trussov (Tinkoff Credit Systems) and Luciano Pagliarini (Saunier Duval) next home.

A total of 57 riders were in the lead group, but at least fifteen of these crashed or were held up inside the final 500 metres. Three riders from Team Slipstream went down, with Julian Dean and Chris Sutton suffering cuts and bruises and Mangus Backstedt breaking his collarbone. The crash occurred when Backstedt clipped the wheel of Woulter Weylandt (Quick Step) while driving the team's leadout train.

Napolitano was, predictably, delighted to come out best on his 27th birthday. The 2007 Giro d'Italia stage winner had this week finished third and second on stages two and three of the Tour of Qatar.

"I beat Petacchi and McEwen at the Tour of Italy, but this is the first time that I have won ahead of Tom Boonen," he told Cyclingnews after the prize presentation. "It was a bit dangerous at the end because of Backstedt's crash, but it was 500 metres to go and didn't affect my sprint.

"It was a good stage, and it is great to win. It gives me motivation [for the future]."

Boonen successfully held onto his race leader's jersey and looks increasingly likely to take his second overall victory on the Doha Corniche tomorrow. He is now 17 seconds ahead of team-mate Steven de Jongh and 30" up on Greg Van Avermaet (Silence Lotto), the best young rider.

"The sprint went perfectly until Backstedt touched the wheel of Woulter Weylandt," he stated. "That created a gap and meant that Steven De Jongh was up front with five or six riders. I doubted for a moment if I should go after him, but then I thought that perhaps the others could beat him. I closed the gap, but I waited too long in doing so…I only sprinted for a few metres, then I realised it was too late."

This does contrast somewhat with the footage of the sprint, which showed that Boonen was second wheel to De Jongh at 150 metres to go. Napolitano jumped and was clearly quicker, despite taking a longer line around the last curve. Loddo too got by the Belgian, who appeared to lack some of his usual oomph in the sprint.

Boonen had finished yesterday to Loddo and was determined to reassert himself as the fastest man in the race today. However he recognised that the biggest priority is to steer clear of trouble, especially with the leader's jersey on his back. "The most important thing is that we didn't ourselves get injured in Backstedt's crash."

Boonen was asked after the stage if his successes here in the past have meant that people have an unrealistic expectation that he will come out on top. "Winning is not guaranteed," he replied. "Don't forget that this is perhaps the most nervous race of the year."

Backstedt can certainly back up that assertion. He put in a very strong surge with about 500 metres to go and was overtaking the Quick Step leadout train when the accident happened. It was looking very good for Slipstream at that point, but things didn't work out.

"I just dipped my head down quickly to check I still had Julian Dean on my wheel," he told Cyclingnews several hours after the stage."As I looked up he [Woulter Wylandt] had just swung over and I had nowhere to go. I had no time to react, I just went over the bars. That was it.

"Up until that point it looked fantastic. We had 450 metres to go, I still hadn't opened up the gas fully and we still had Julian [Dean] to go before Chris [Sutton]. It was as good as they come. It is just a shame that we couldn't pull it off."

"It happened really quick," said Sutton. "I was sitting on Julian's wheel, it was one of the best places to be because he was sitting on Maggie [Magnus Backstedt]. Then basically there was just a tip of wheels and we all went down.

"I felt really good up to that point. I felt really strong, just every day I am getting better and better. Tomorrow is another day, I will try again."

Had Sutton pulled off a win and Greg Van Avermaet finished third or further back, the bonifications would have meant that he would have moved ahead of the Belgian in the best young rider competition. He would also have been up to third overall.

That said, Van Avermaet also felt that the accident affected his chances. He crossed the line in fourth place, but said afterwards that Backstedt's crash had delayed him.

"I had to brake just after the fall and the sprint was over then. But I am happy that I didn't fall myself and my condition is good. I don't think I would have won without the crash...winning is too much for me, as to beat guys like Boonen and Napolitano would be very difficult. But maybe when I am a little bit older it will be different."

Still, for Van Avermaet and Sutton, the young riders will have a chance to go up against their older rivals in the final stage. They've also got the considerable motivation of the fight for the young riders jersey and a top three place overall.

How it unfolded

129 riders lined out in warm conditions for the start of the penultimate stage of the Tour of Qatar, the longest in the race at 170 kilometres. It ran from Al Khor Academy to Al Khor Corniche, located beside each other, and finishing in the same place as the previous day's fourth stage.

Heading out northwest from the small town and then looping around the top of the peninsula, there were two intermediate sprints en route. These came at Al Zubarah (97km) and Umm Suwaiya (161km).

Race leader Tom Boonen was chilled out before the start, posing for photographs with Belgians who live in Qatar and even donning festive hats that they had with them. Despite the generally relaxed atmosphere, the hammer went down soon after the drop of the flag and the bunch was split into three pieces.

After 19 kilometres of racing the gap was 35 seconds back to the second group. However the chasers gradually reduced this lead and the whole peloton came back together at the 38 kilometre point. Martin Kohler (BMC Racing Team) then attacked immediately after the regrouping, but was brought back.

The strong tailwind saw 56 kilometres being covered in the first hour. Soon after that mark, Omar Hasanin (Doha Team) and Hossein Jahanbanian (Iran Cycling Federation) struck out and rapidly gained time. Both were involved in yesterday's breakaway and have been among the most aggressive riders this week.

They had 35 seconds lead after 64 kilometres of racing, then a stall in the bunch saw them add four minutes to this in just nine kilometres. Despite that buffer, this lead evaporated over the next twenty kilometres due to the driving by the Quick Step and Silence-Lotto teams. The duo were caught just before the first intermediate sprint at Al Zubarah (97km), taken by Steven De Jongh (Quick Step) ahead of Frederick Willems (Liquigas) and Nico Eeckhout (Topsport Vlaanderen).

The peloton had broken into two groups by this point and the gap grew rapidly. It was 20 seconds at kilometre 118, then up to 2'55" after 140 kilometres of racing.

Mitchell Docker (Drapac Porsche) broke away before the second intermediate sprint at Umm Suwaiya (161km). De Jongh and Tjallinghi (Silence-Lotto) led the bunch over the line, with the peloton catching the Australian soon afterwards and then staying largely together until the finish.

The speed ramped up as the riders travelled along the same closing kilometres as yesterday, thundering along Al Khor's Corniche. Slipstream Chipotle - H3O were trying to set Chris Sutton up for the sprint, both for the best young rider competition and also in the hope that he could land a stage victory. However a clash of wheels between Weylandt and Backstedt saw the latter hit the deck and several others also fall. The 2004 Paris-Roubaix victor came out worst, breaking his collarbone.

Napolitano avoided the carnage and sprinted in ahead of yesterday's victor Loddo and Boonen. Sutton had also fallen but remounted and retained his sixth place overall plus his second behind Van Avermaet in the young rider competition.

All the riders from 65th place back lost 10'31", with the exception of two who retired. They were Bouygues Telecom's Franck Renier and Yohann Gene, both of whom fell during the stage. Gene dislocated his collarbone in the accident.

What's next

The final stage of the 2008 Tour of Qatar is 120 kilometres in length and goes from Al Wakra to Doha Corniche. There are intermediate sprints at Mesaieed (16km) and on the third out of seven crossings of the finish line. This final circuit is nine kilometres in length.
