Turning the clock back five years, former race victor Alberto Loddo today once again stood atop a podium at the Tour of Qatar. Back in 2003 the Italian took two stage victories en route to his general classification triumph; fast forward to the end of stage five at the Al Khor Corniche, and Loddo executed a perfect sprint to come off Tom Boonen's wheel and scoop the win.

Now beginning his first season with Tinkoff Credit Systems, the 29 year-old still has time to step it up a level in terms of his victories. Last season he took five stage wins plus the points classification in the Tour de Langkawi, then went on to win stages in the Vuelta Ciclista a la Rioja and the Vuelta Ciclista Asturias. He was hoping for a strong showing in the Giro d'Italia, having placed third on a stage there in 2006, but the Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni - Selle Italia team were overlooked for a wildcard and that goal came to nothing.

However, beating Boonen today will have given him a big confidence boost, helping him believe that the best is yet to come. "After winning my first [pro] race here in 2002, it is a great result to come back here and win today," he told reporters after the race.

"It was a fantastic race, very difficult from the beginning. The average was very high, but the team planned the stage very well. We did a fantastic job with all the team members. At the end, we had three men in the front and they did a great job to get me to the right place. I'd like to thank them for that."

Loddo was one of 41 riders who finished in the same time at the end of the flat, fast 131.5 kilometres from Khalifa Stadium. After a stage marked initially by a long breakaway and then a split in the peloton, he timed his move to perfection and came around Boonen inside the final 50 metres. The Belgian had gone from a long way out but said afterwards that he underestimated the headwind, losing crucial speed within a few seconds of the line. Unlike the victor, he also did not lunge and this may have made the difference.

An air-punching Loddo thus led home the 2005 world road race champion, with Sebastian Siedler (Skil-Shimano), Angelo Furlan (Credit Agricole), Paolo Bossoni (Lampre) and Chris Sutton (Slipstream Chipotle-H3O) taking places three through to six.

Boonen was undoubtedly disappointed not to extend the winning sequence which started on Sunday in the team time trial and continued until yesterday. He topped the victory podium three times, but today had to downgrade his cannibal-like domination and ‘just’ make do with the jerseys for the overall and points classification leads. He’s been having a superb race, of course, and felt that if he had timed his move a bit better he could have nabbed another stage win today.

“There was a curve at the end because we are travelling along the cornice,” he said just before the jersey presentation. “The wind was coming from a certain angle but we changed direction as we followed the road. I waited until 500 metres to go like always, then started getting ready. I went without problems, I put it in the eleven [sprocket] but at100 metres from the line it [the wind] was like a wall. I lost five, six kilometres per hour, all my speed was gone. Loddo was on my wheel, he waited for the right moment and then did a good sprint.”

Like most champions, he doesn’t like being beaten but looks more and more like the overall winner in the race. He ended the day 18 seconds ahead of team-mate De Jongh, with Greg Van Avermaet dropping to 26 seconds back overall after placing eighth in the final gallop. Boonen’s got two stages left to complete and both he and the team will do their utmost to maintain control on the race and guarantee a repeat of his 2006 success.

Young rider battle

Despite finishing behind closest-challenger Chris Sutton, Van Avermaet continues to lead the young rider classification. Sutton needed to place in the top three to take a bonus, but was unable to get higher than sixth. However he was smiling at the finish after a great day's work by his Slipstream Chipotle-H3O team.

"The boys were unbelievable today. I have never seen a team ride like they did today," the Australian enthused. "Everyone was pulling. I saw a spot [to go for it]…Quick Step were controlling the race, I said 'Boys, we are going to have to do something here to split it up.' We just put it in the gutter and the boys just swopped off hard. It made my job a lot easier. I was pulling some turns as well. We had Magnus, Dave, Killian, Huub, Martijn, pretty much the whole team up there.

"Once we put it in the gutter, Quick Step could see what we were doing and so too did Liquigas. I spoke to Boonen after we did it and the group was down to about 20 or 30 riders. Tom said that they were just getting ready to do the same thing, so he said that it was great that we actually initiated the move."

After the finish, the Slipstream riders congratulated each other on their performance. David Millar, Magnus Backstedt and the others were all buzzing after showing committed work as a unit, and underlined that they were more than justified in being invited to Qatar.

"We have shown that we are one of the strongest teams out there…I think that was proved today," Sutton continued. "We tried to get the sprint finish down perfect today but it wasn't to be – I think that everyone was a bit heavy from swopping off. But it was worth a try. We hit the front and JD [Julian Dean] took me to about 150 to go...I tried to kick but ran out of legs a little bit. It was no one's fault but my own. But the boys rode excellent today, hats off to them."

Loddo was, of course, also happy with how his own squad performed. "My team-mates did a fantastic job today. Qatar is a peculiar race because there is not a second's rest. The average speed is always very high, over 50 km/h, and is always difficult at the start of the season.

"Winning today was more difficult than winning here in the past. There are several teams with very strong sprinters here, they get organised and they do very good work for them. So taking the win was great."

How it unfolded

Under bright sun and in temperatures of over 20 degrees, 130 riders lined out for the start of the fourth stage of the race. Steve Bovay of the BMC Racing Team was the sole rider not to sign on, the Swiss having broken his collarbone in a crash the day before.

The stage began at the impressive multi-sport Khalifa Stadium and covered 131.5 kilometres en route to the finish at Al Khor Corniche. Many of the same roads as the previous day were used, and there were bonus sprints at Al Jemailiya (55km) and Umm Suwaiya (122km).

The attacks started to go immediately after the drop of the flag, and race leader Tom Boonen found himself under pressure due to a puncture. However he soon returned to the peloton, which had by then mopped up those out front.

Christophe Laurent (Slipstream Chipotle-H3O) then forged clear 15 kilometres into the stage but he was brought back. His team-mate Martijn Maaskant also had a go but he too was soon gobbled up.

Four others – Rubens Bertogliati (Saunier Duval-Scott), Alexandre Gottfried (Tinkoff Credit Systems), Niki Terpstra (Milram) and Roy Curvers (Skil Shimano) - had more luck, surging ahead after about 19 kilometres of racing and building a decent lead.

Magnus Backstedt (Slipstream Chipotle-H3O) tried a birthday attack but to no avail. Four others then set off in pursuit of the leaders, namely Nico Eeckhout (Topsport Vlaanderen), Omar Hasanin (Doha Team), Hossein Jahanbanian (Iran Cycling Federation) and Angus Morton (Drapac Porsche). After 32 kilometres of racing, the four chasers were 1'20" back and the main bunch was 1'35" down.

A total of 52 kilometres were covered in the first hour of racing. Around this point the two lead groups were just 10" apart and they merged soon afterwards, just in time for the first intermediate sprint at Al Jemailiya (55km). Here Omar Hasanin (Doha Team) was first to the line, beating Curvers and Terpstra.

The peloton was still some way off, lying 1'20" back with 60 kilometres covered, but an injection of pace by the Slipstream and Quick Step teams split it in three and spelt trouble for the break. Race leader Tom Boonen, best young rider Greg Van Avermaet (Silence Lotto) and about 45 others were in the front segment, while the previous day's runner-up Danilo Napolitano (Lampre) was in the second bunch.

Boonen's group was moving very quickly and gobbled up the eight leaders at the 75 kilometre point. The second part of the peloton was 18 seconds down, and the third was ten seconds further back again. This latter segment would soon rejoin the chasers, adding numbers but not impetus to their effort to rejoin.

After going through the feedzone at Al Ghuwayriya (80km), the lead group's advantage increased to 35 seconds. It wavered for a while, but then those up front turned the screw a little more and dragged it out. With 36 clicks remaining it was 45 seconds; at the 25 kilometre to go board it was 1'20", and five kilometres later it was 1'40".

Greg Van Avermaet beat his Silence-Lotto team-mate Jurgen Roelandts and Steven De Jongh (Quick Step) at the second bonus sprint of Umm Suwaiya (km 122), taking three seconds back from Boonen. That left him 20 seconds behind the race leader and ten off De Jongh’s second place. However the 2005 world champion wasn't worried; he had six team-mates in the front group and they did things perfectly from there until the line, where he launched his sprint and looked set to add once again to his formidable race record. However Loddo was in the right place to benefit from the changing wind, timing his move just right to come by Boonen, lunge for the line, and return once again to the podium in Qatar.

What's next

The penultimate day of the race is also the longest. The riders travel 170 kilometres from Al Khor Academy to once again finish on Al Khor Corniche. There are two intermediate sprints en route, namely Al Zubarah (97km) and Umm Suwaiya (161km).
