7th Tour of Qatar - 2.1Qatar, January 27-February 1, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 6 - February 1: Al Wakra - Doha Corniche, 120 kmThe Cannibal of QatarBoonen takes fourteenth individual stage win, second GC title
By Shane Stokes in Doha
The 27 year-old beat stage four victor Alberto Loddo (Tinkoff Credit Systems), Brazilian sprinter Luciano Pagliarini (Saunier Duval) and 37 others to the line, with the rest of the field finishing further back in dribs and drabs, fatigued from a very windy day and also a very quick six days of competition.
"It was a fast stage," the Belgian said afterwards. "I was continually trying to stay on the outside on the right [while riding along the long corniche towards the finish] because the wind was coming from behind and to the left. Because of the wind, I lost a lot of energy in the last three kilometres. I had to struggle for the right position on the outside about fifteen times.
"I just had enough to come off Steven de Jongh's wheel. I waited very long to start the sprint, but it worked out well."
Those closest to him in the general classification, namely Quick Step team-mate De Jongh and Greg Van Avermaet (Silence Lotto) were sixth and 21st respectively. Once Boonen's ten-second time bonus was factored into the GC time, the 2005 world road race champion ended the 2.1-ranked race 27" ahead of De Jongh and 46" up on Van Avermaet.
Australian rider Chris Sutton (Slipstream Chipotle-H3O) was fourth overall, 46" back, while Jurgen Roelandts (Silence-Lotto) and Alexandre Pichot (Bouygues Telecom) were fifth and sixth.
Boonen dominated the points classification and his Quick Step squad were clear winners in the team competition. "It is good that we are this strong early in the season," he stated. "We did a good job, because after winning a lot of stages in recent years, it becomes a habit to win here. If it doesn't happen, you might start to worry."
He has taken 14 stage wins in all, Quick Step have landed two team time trial victories and the team have won the past three editions. The Tour of Qatar suits the riders' abilities from the point of view of the high speeds, flat terrain and strong winds, and its clearly a race they like to do well in.
"It is good to compete here," continued Boonen. "It is good training, it is not too hard. There are strong teams here and that creates good competition. The race has teams that are have a lot of experience in the wind like Lotto, Liquigas and Lampre.
"As you can see in these stages, our team is going really well and these kind of races are our speciality. We show it here every year."
He was keen to pay tribute to the others in white and blue. "I want to thank my team. Without a team you are nothing. If one or two guys are bad, my level drops because I need them for the sprint. If somebody makes a mistake three or four kilometres from the finish line, nobody sees it but I have to pay for that in the last two hundred meters because I go too early or too late. I need everybody [to win], and everybody did a really good job." How it unfolded
The riders rolled out of Al Wakra at approximately 11.15 am, pedalling in a strong headwind. The palmtrees lining the road were bending in the gusts and small amounts of sand were being blown along the ground. Almost all of the riders were content to roll along in the bunch, sheltering there, but Tareq Esmaeili (Doha Team) attacked and was 1'20 ahead by the time he raced onto the Doha Corniche to start the first of nine nine-kilometre finishing laps.
He took the points at the first bonus sprint, and was 6'40 ahead of the bunch. Piet Rooijakkers (Skil Shimano) and Maarten Tjallingii (Silence Lotto) were second and third, leading the peloton over the line. One lap later, the gap was 7'35", and soon afterwards reached its maximum of eight minutes.
After 43.5km of racing Taylor Tolleson (BMC Racing Team) attacked and got 15". The bunch was also starting to speed up and by the time the riders crossed the finish line for the fourth time, Esmaeili was 6'30" ahead of the lone chaser and 6'40" over the main bunch.
Angus Morton (Drapac Porsche) attacked from the peloton and caught Tolleson. Hossein Askari (Iran) then set off in pursuit, while at the same time the Quick Step and Lampre teams were working hard on the front of the peloton.
With five laps to go, 57 kilometres after the start, Esmaeili was four minutes ahead of Tolleson and Morton. Askari was 25 seconds further back, then the peloton was 4'55" down. One lap later the gaps had dropped considerably; the leader was 2'20" ahead of the two chasers, with Askari three minutes back. The main bunch was 3'35" behind.
Askari was caught at kilometre 72, then Gene Bates (Drapac Porche) and Aymen Ben Hassine (Doha team) set off in pursuit of the front trio. The two chasers caught those in front but all of the escapees were brought back on the penultimate lap.
A bunch sprint was looking inevitable, but that didn't stop Dean Windsor (Drapac Porsche) from having a go. He was recaptured and then Bart Vanheule (Topsport Vlaanderen), Jackson Stewart (BMC Racing) and a persistent Askari took flight, holding a twelve second lead as they crossed the finish line for the bell. With five kilometres to go the bunch were just seven seconds back, however, and the break was finished four clicks later.
That ensured yet another bunch gallop. After being beaten in the two previous days, Tom Boonen was back on top and grabbed his third individual stage victory of the week and his second overall win in the Tour of Qatar. His consistency also wound up the points jersey, while the Quick Step riders beat Silence Lotto to the teams title.
The youth classification went to Van Avermaet, who beat Sutton by six seconds. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by AFP Photo
