Jeff Louder (BMC) perfectly executed a team plan to take the victory in a two up sprint against his breakaway companion Luis Amaran (Colavita/Sutter Home). The bunch was lead home 11 seconds later by Ivan Dominguez (Toyota-United) who took out the heated field sprint for third.

Rock Racing successfully maintained Santiago Botero’s overall lead ahead of Chris Baldwin (Toyota-United) and Francois Parisien (Symmetrics).

"I lead through the last half of the course and tried to be first through the last corners," said Louder of his last lap positioning ahead of his four breakaway companions. For the final hour the quartet had maintained a slender 30 second advantage over the main peloton.

"It’s always a tricky finish here and I knew I had to be first through the last corner so that was my tactic and it worked – I’m really excited and happy for BMC," Louder continued. "The boys worked really hard yesterday and I think we were all disappointed in the result. We feel the team is really strong and we just missed a few tactics yesterday. Today we played the game exactly how we said we were going to and it worked."

Luis Amaran (Colavita/Sutter Home) attacked thirty minutes into the criterium and completed ten laps alone before a group of three riders, Louder, Curtis Gun (Successful Living) and Shawn Milne (Team Type 1), bridged across. The four riders built up a thirty second advantage on the peloton which was being controlled by the Rock Racing team of overnight leader, Santiago Botero.

"I was trying to create a break and then once it was established I waited for the other three to bridge across," said Amaran who accumulated enough point throughout the criterium to be tied with team-mate Sebastian Haedo for the green points jersey. "My idea was to go for the stage win again and to try to move up further on the GC. We were all working together and we ended up with a large gap. It is normal that teams behind will start their lead out so our time started to go down on the last lap."

While the majority of the criterium saw the green and black colours of Rock Racing setting tempo at the front, with twenty-minutes remaining they received help from Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast who were trying to set up the stage for their sprinter Alex Candelario. However, with ten laps to go Toyota-United took control of the peloton in an effort to bring their sprinter Ivan Dominguez to the line with a victory.

While the gap between the break and the main field remained at a steady thirty-seconds for the majority of the event, it was significantly reduced to eleven seconds on the final lap. "Once we got all together Curtis was going for points and Luis was defending for point so it was a little tricky," explained Louder. "It was a clean break and everyone was taking turns. I really wasn’t sure we were going to make it and I though we were going to get caught on the last lap because there was a little bit of cat and mouse. With two laps to go I knew we were going to stay away."

On the last lap Louder made his winning move by attacking on the backside of the circuit gaining twenty-meters on the other three. According to Amaran he closed the gap through the final chicane where Gun and Milne had an accident behind. "I chased him and caught him through the last corners and I think that gave him an advantage to be in front through those corners in first position."

Dominguez applauded his team effort to reduce the time on the last ten laps and even though they were not able to catch the break, they gave him the opportunity to prove he was the fast sprinter in the field.

"The break was very far ahead, thirty-five seconds with two or three laps to go is a lot of time," said Dominguez. "But my guys did a great job by taking the front of the race with ten laps to go. Today when we needed the help no one came around to work with us, I don’t what is the deal there but in the end I had to show that the fastest guy here is me. The Rock Racing team did a great job and then so did my team. Unfortunately the two guys in the break crashed so I was able to go for third place."

Fahlin continues sprint streak

The pro women’s field continued to impress their downtown Redlands fans in a high speed race to the line that saw Emilia Fahlin (High Road) take her fifth field sprint since making her American peloton debut in early February.

Fahlin came out of the final corner in third position and used her powerful sprint to claim the victory over second placed Alex Wrubleski (Webcor) and Brenda Lyons (Advil-ChapStick).

High Road’s leader Mara Abbott maintained her lead of eleven seconds ahead of second place Alex Wrubleski (Webcor) and third placed Katharine Carroll (Aaron’s).

"I think there have been fast criteriums here in California but this one was fun because there were some technical sections, which I like because of all the corners," said Fahlin who is excited to test her sprint in the European peloton next month. "We wanted to be there if a move went an to try to protect our overall,"

"The sprints have been working out for me really well and I am really happy with how my sprint has progressed. I have had a great opportunity to work on it here and to be able to go for the sprints in the end."

The women’s sixty-minute criterium started out fast on the hunt for the time bonuses positioned at forty-five minutes, thirty-minutes and five laps remaining.

Second place on the day Wrubleski captured enough time bonuses and points during the event to leap frog into second place in the overall and into the lead of the points competition.

Cheerwine’s rider Anne Samplonius started a series of breakaways early into the event that caused the field to react and the speeds to increase. With twelve laps remaining a significant break rolled off the front that was represented by most of the teams in the peloton.

Team Aaron’s brought the break back within a couple of laps, which resulted in counter attacks from Advil/ChapStick, while High Road kept their sprinters well positioned for the finale.

According to third placed Brenda Lyons most of the team who were in contention on the GC were fighting to keep the field together. "I think that yesterday and tomorrow’s stage are so difficult that there are only so many matches that riders wanted to burn here in the criterium," said Lyons who used her savvy criterium experience to gain a podium placing.

"We are not apart of the overall GC and so I think we had a little wiggle room to see what we could bring to the table today and I think we met our goals by being where we needed to be to allow me to get on the podium.".

Lyons explained that the final laps were fast while teams like Webcor, Aaron’s, Cheerwine and High Road set up lead out for their sprinters. "I put in a hard effort to get into the mix of the other lead out trains and surfed them until I saw the opportunity to jump. I jumped into the fourth final corner and lead down the hill to through the chicane and I was passed by the Wrubleski and Fahlin on the straight to the finish line."
