Rock Racings Santiago Botero confirmed that he is well on his way back to form today. After attacking with five other riders on the second lap, he waited until the last climb of the day to make his killer move, eventually finishing close to a minute ahead of his break-away companions for his first victory on American soil. The time he gained with his move on the final climb was enough to wrestle the overall lead away from overnight leader Rory Sutherland (Health Net - Maxxis).Second placed went to Sebastian Haedo (Colavita/Sutter Home) who won the sprint ahead of Burke Swindlehurst (Bissell).

"We knew that we needed to do a hard race today," said Botero. "This is the reason me and the other riders worked hard in the break away. First, I attacked in the mountain because that is where there looked to be a good opportunity. After, we knew that Sebastian was fast and that we needed to take time to move into the yellow jersey so I attacked again on the last climb."

Botero is happy to be finally racing again after and extended lay off, and used the opportunity to sing the praises of the organizers as well as thank his team. "Thank you for welcoming me to Redlands, this is my first race in seven months and my first race in America," he said. "The organization is the same as the biggest races in Europe and I'm very happy to be here. I have a lot of friends in this group who are on the other teams. I have felt very welcome here so far racing in the US. This is a nice way to say thank you to my team."

Five riders leaped off of the front of a stellar peloton, over the KOM climb located on the back half of the 20 kilometer circuit on the second lap. Botero and Swindlehurst were accompanied by Chris Baldwin (Toyota-United), Francois Parisien (Symmetrics) and James Mattis (California Giant Farms). Sebastian Haedo joined them on the descent that followed the climb to make it six.

"There was a group of four up the road and one between my little group of another four," explained Haedo. "I could see that the riders ahead looked like they had a good mix of teams so I bridged across to them and caught them on the descent. Even though it was still early in the race, the cards were on the table so we took the chance and made it."

Haedo went on to explain that the break worked very well together with a mutual interest in opening the time gap on the field as fast as possible. "Everyone worked one hundred percent and we were all together over the last climb when Botero attacked and he was the strongest guy in the break. No one even tried to chase him because he was super strong on the climb. We tried to just stay steady and work together to try to close the gap on the flat part after the climb."

Haedo noted that while he most likely had the fastest legs in the group it was a difficult sprint due to the amount of effort put out during the stage. "Everyone was tired in the end and no one was really strong. We tried to chase Botero and we did all we could to bring him back. I might have been the fastest guy in the break but I did not feel good, just like everyone else."

Third placed Burke Swindlehurst commented on the strength of the break and in particular Botero that lead to their success. "From what I could tell the first lap of the race you needed to be in good position due to all the tight corners," said Swindlehurst. "If you weren't in the top fifteen than you had to really fight your way to get back up to the front.

"I knew that Santiago and Baldwin were good time trialists and were definitely putting in their share of the work today. It wasn't until we came into the third lap and we still had five minutes that I knew we were going to stay away, especially because of the kind of effort Santiago was putting in at the front. Most of us in the break were cross-eyed sitting on his wheel."

Hard work coming from the peloton reduced the gap to just over ninety seconds by the finish, but they had left their run too late.

Stage two will commence in downtown Redlands for the criterium where Botero will lead his Rock Racing team-mates around a 1.8-miles circuit in the yellow leaders jersey. sports director Mariano Fredick admitted his delight in having the leading the overall for such a strong spectator event.

"We think that there is no better stage to be wearing the leader's jersey like the Redlands criterium," said Fredick. "It's one hundred and eight guys who are hungry for a win. It will be tough but it is exactly where we wanted to be going into tomorrow. We will most likely set a nice tempo and try to get through the day."

Carroll wins from decisive break; Abbott maintains lead

After several laps of aggressive bike racing a break of thirteen riders that made up the remnants of a dwindled, front group battled their way to the finish line in pursuit of a stage victory. Katharine Carroll (Aaron’s) not only out sprinted her breakaway companions for the stage win but also captured enough points to move comfortably into the points jersey lead. Former Canadian national champion Alex Wrubleski (Webcor) took third place in the break sprint ahead of third place Leigh Hobson (Cheerwine).

Mara Abbott (High Road) maintained her overall lead in lieu of a four second time loss at the finish line while Carroll moved further into second place ahead of third placed Wrubleski.

"Each time up the climb there was a selection and it got harder and harder after for the peloton to regroup each lap," said stage winner Katharine Carroll who is not new to being in the team’s leading role. "We knew there would be a selection. Since, our plan was to try to win the big bike race we knew we needed to put pressure on high road to isolate them, which is what every team needed to do to."

Meredith Millar initiated a break of six riders that snapped off the front of the peloton on the first lap and was not fully reabsorbed until the third lap when Team High Road flexed their strength before the KOM sprint. "She initiated the first attack that stayed away in the first two laps," said Carroll proud of her team-mates efforts. "Then she soloed on the last lap. She did exactly what we needed her to do which forced High Road to chase. We had numbers and tried to race aggressive."

According to second placed Alex Wrubleski her team Webcor’s race plan worked, moving her closer to race leader Mara Abbott and into third place. "Christine Thorburn kept the pace high going into the KOM sprint on the third lap and I went at the 200 meter sign and got it picking up more time bonuses," said Wrubleski who picked up another six seconds at the finish line.

The front group was reduced to approximately twenty riders for the fourth and final lap because of an aggressive series of attacks through the climb on the backside of the circuit. A lull in the field provided Meredith Millar (Aaron’s) with the perfect opportunity to solo away from the group. Millar gained a maximum of ninety seconds on the field before High Road’s Kim Anderson and Alex Rhodes took on the task of brining her back.

According to Wrubleski, Millar was still ahead over the preliminary climb leading into a steep descent when Abbott attacked and the two bridged across to Millar. A group of ten riders rejoined the trio a set up for a flat and fast road to the finish line.

Aaron’s used their numbers to send off a series of attacks that were countered by predominately by Webcor’s Thorburn. But with two kilometers to go and the field intact, Aaron’s revised their plan to set up a sprint for their GC leader Carroll.

"I think I got a good enough jump when I went but I was probably fading at the end," said Carroll who moved into the lead of the green jersey’s point competition. "I can’t say enough about how the team worked today. As for the points jersey, I think green’s a good colour for me, it kind of brings out my eyes," joked Carroll who rolled through to take the points because of the additional lucrative cash prize.

Third placed on the day Leigh Hobson acknowledged her team Cheerwine’s effort through out the challenging stage as a success in leaping further ahead on GC. "I got a time bonus one of the QOM’s which were important for us to try to move ahead a little bit," said Hobson.

"We were trying to really focus on Laura VanGilder finishing because she can really pull off a good sprint. She was with is the whole way except for just over the last climb. But, we are happy with the podium finish here."
