Dream comes true for Sulzberger

Dreams sometimes do come true – ask Wesley Sulzberger. The 20 year-old Wes Sulzberger won Stage 6 of the Jayco Tour of Tasmania, an 81 km road race that finished in his "backyard."
"I was born in Beaconsfield and have been dreaming about winning this stage since the tour schedule was made public," said Wes Sulzberger after the win.
Importantly, Sulzberger beat home Canberra's Robert McLachlan, who is his biggest danger in the Tattersall's Cup, which concludes in Launceston on Sunday after multi-stage tours in Gippsland, Murray River, Tasmania and the Australian Cycling Grand Prix in Ballarat.
Sulzberger extended his lead to 25-points over McLachlan, but with five stages of this tour and overall tour honours still to be counted, he is far from over the line.
How it unfolded
An intimate knowledge of the terrain gave Tasmanian Wesley Sulzberger a popular victory in the toughest stage yet of the tour, an 80.7 km climb from Latrobe to Beaconsfield, via Holwell, including a Category 1 and Category 2 mountain hike.
Sulzberger, recently turned 20 and was able to enjoy the victory with almost his entire family. At the finish line as Sulzberger outsprinted Robert McLachlan and young Victorian Johnnie Walker, were his mum, Linda, grandmother Rhonda Barrett and elder brother Bernard, himself an accomplished Australian road cyclist. Wes' father Michael missed the finish, but only because he working in one of the neutral spares vans. The only immediate family member missing was younger sister Grace.
"Knowing the area obviously worked in my favour," said Sulzberger. "I knew when and where the hills were and knew when to attack and when to sit back and be patient. But in saying that, it didn't make it any easier."
The main GC challengers tended to take it easy in the first half of the stage and that allowed Peter Herzig (Queensland) and Patrick Shaw (Victoria) – along with Cameron Hughes (Queensland) – to establish a break of close to a minute.
Herzig and Shaw are the two candidates fighting out the Events Tasmania Sprint Championship and after the latter had ridden so well in the morning stage, it was somewhat surprising to see him back up in the afternoon and try and repeat the effort. Little changed with the pair sharing sprint points and Shaw will take a 3-point lead into Stage 7 on Friday morning.
Once the riders left the Frankford Highway and started the Cat. 1 climb up to Holwell, the peloton was strung out like a herd of "Farmer Brown's cows." Nineteen riders were able to "hang tough" to the end with Sulzberger claiming home town honours. Included in the lead group was tour leader, Kristian House, his nearest challenger, Carlström and young impressive Tasmanians Josh Wilson and Ryan Sullivan.
The next group of riders strolled over the finish line 4.16 minutes later, while officially last for Stage 6 was Sean Finning – a stage winner only three hours earlier!
