Finning shows returning form

Commonwealth Games gold medal track cyclist Sean Finning ruled supreme in a lightning quick criterium at Latrobe after being part of a hard working quartet that skipped away from the main general classification challengers. Finning (21) has overcome a niggling back injury he brought with him from a hectic racing and training campaign in America.
"Its nice to get some form back and it was even better to get another win," he said.
How it unfolded
Finning's breakaway group included fellow Victorian Patrick Shaw, Tasmanian Daniel Furmston and 19 year-old Port Macquarie (NSW) rider Chris Jory. The quartet slipped into overdrive and was away for 27 of the 30 laps before Finland's Kjell Carlström and NSW's Tim Guy were able to bridge the gap just as the riders crossed under the finish banner for the penultimate time.
However prior to that, Shaw had ruled the intermediate sprints, winning all 11 on offer and reeling in overnight Sprint Championship leader Peter Herzig by three points. Shaw started the day 30-points shy of Herzig, but finished the stage wearing a new jersey to signal his speed.
Carlström led the lead group over the line at the bell lap and most pundits were expecting an international victory. Somebody forgot to tell that to Finning though. On the second turn out of the home straight, Finning made his move and his renowned punch when it counts came to the fore.
In a rare finish that allows a lone rider to sit up and enjoy the atmosphere, Finning had two seconds to spare over Carlström and a surprise third placegetter, Chris Jory.
"The Tattersall's Cup series is ideal preparation for me for the upcoming World Cup, where I'll be concentrating on the both the points score and Madison races," Finning said.
Carlström's bold chase down, although unsuccessful in claiming the stage victory, did elevate him into second place on the GC leader board, reducing his overnight margin of 1.57 minute against Kristian House to just 45 seconds.
But House was unperturbed. "I didn't mind Kjell getting a little bit of time back, because it takes the heat off me," remarked House. "Everyone in the peloton is watching me, so I can't make too many moves, if Kjell or a couple of others move up in time, then the peloton will have to watch them as well. ... This move might backfire me come Sunday's final stage, but I'm prepared to back myself."
