Day 9 - July 15: Masters road races

National Masters Road Titles Awarded

By Andy Lee, USA Cycling

Five national championship titles were awarded Saturday as the masters road races kicked off at the USA Cycling National Festival at Seven Springs. Best overall awards were also handed out to the categories that competed Saturday.

The youngest masters categories (men 30-34 and 35-39) not only had to battle each other for 88 kilometres on the hilly 44-km course, but also heavy fog, rain and wind as they raced for national titles. Mike Olheiser (Huntsville, Ala. / MMW/Carve) was the first to roll across the line ahead of 59 competitors in two hours, 27 minutes and 37 seconds for the master men 30-34 championship.

Olheiser was off the front early in the contest with five lead riders. By the completion of the first of two laps, the field came together a minute behind, but riders continued to fall off the back of the chase group. The peloton fell apart on the final two climbs and Olheiser was able to build a one minute and five second gap to roll across the line alone.

Eric Bean (Durham, N.C. / Unattached) was awarded the Best Overall Masters Men 30-34 title.

For the second race of the day, Kenny Williams (Kenmore, Wash. / First Rate Mortgage) claimed the men's 35-39 title ahead of a three-man sprint. In the middle of the first of two 44-km laps, a lead group of 12 riders developed in the field of 46. By the conclusion of lap one, a four-rider break that Williams was a part of began to build a lead on the peloton.

"For the most part we worked pretty well together, but with two K to go, we started playing cat-and-mouse on the feed hill and Frederic Thomas jumped first," Williams said. "I let him get a nice, little lead and I kind of checked that I got far enough up the hill before I hit my acceleration to make sure I didn't fade too soon. I knew the hill was tough enough and you could lose a lot of time if you didn't get over the actual feed hill. Got there with plenty of acceleration and got to ride it out a little bit."

Williams also picked up the Best Overall Masters Men 35-39 title.

The master women 30-34 and 35-39 were combined for their road race. The weather cooperated with the 28 total riders. Throughout their two, 44-km laps, the peloton stayed closely together with no one launching attacks. By the end of the first lap, just the top five from each of the groups remained.

It wasn't until the final 400 meters of the contest that a successful attack was launched. Sally Price (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio / Team Summa) of the master women 35-39 category attacked at the feed zone climb before the finish line to roll in ahead of the field for her category's title in 2:55:44. Price was also awarded the Best Overall Masters Women 35-39 title.

Betsy Shogren (Morgantown W.V. / Swashbuckler Brewing Co./PaRenFaire.com) was just six seconds behind to take the 30-34 category championship. Kara Vidaca (Norco, Calif. / Bicycle John's Serious Cycling) was awarded the Best Overall Masters Women 30-34 title.

The final race of the day saw the most favorable conditions - sunny weather and a substantial 57-man field. From the start whistle, the peloton fell apart early with a lead group of 18 riders establishing their dominance by midway through the first of eight, 9.35-km laps. In the end, however, multi-time national champion David Leduc (Willow Springs, N.C. / Mercy Cycling Team) set down the most dominating performance of the day - rolling in 3:41 ahead of his closest competitor.

"It was a very technical course and I don't like to be following people down through turns," said Leduc, who took his category's criterium title Saturday in the same, dominating fashion. "I found in the descents and technical portions of the course I can go real fast and I was coming out of the turns with time on those guys. I wasn't really attacking anybody until midway through the race so I wasn't really expending any energy. The group was fairly small, so I would just pick up time in the technical sections and I made one attack midway through and a guy (Wayne Watson (Denver, Colo. / Vitamin Cottage)) went with me and I wanted to test his legs."

Leduc was also awarded the Best Overall Masters Men 55-59 title for his efforts in the road race and criterium.
