Day 10 - July 16: Masters road races

More masters road race titles awarded

By Andy Lee, USA Cycling

Five more masters road championships were awarded Sunday at the USA Cycling National Festival at Seven Springs. The Best Overall titles in the five categories run Sunday were also awarded.

The closest race of the day capped off a hot day of masters racing when Malcolm Hill (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Specialized/Sonance) claimed the master men 50-54 title in a sprint finish in two hours, nine minutes and 24 seconds.

"My teammate (Keith Ketterer (Newport Beach, Calif. / Sonance/Specialized)) and I were in the lead three with one K to go, and he did a real good job of pulling David Zimbelman (Taunton, Mass. / Excel Sports) back," Hill said. "Once we got on his wheel, we just started throwing the attacks. Zimbelman had me coming into the final feed zone and I just took my time, waited, jumped and it stuck. I just gave everything. I had nothing left at the end, nothing at all and I collapsed at the line."

Halfway into the eight-lap, 75-kilometre contest, Hill, Ketterer and Zimbelman broke away from the peloton. Throughout the contest they maintained roughly a 25-second gap on the field with various riders bridging; but in the closing kilometres, the three were all that remained in front of the 73-man field. With two kilometres to go, Zimbelman attacked and Hill responded, beating him to the line in the closing meters.

Zimbelman finished second in the road race, but took home the Best Overall title for his age category.

The strongest women's performance from the masters' women came in the 40-44 category. Mara Miller (Ramsey, N.J./ Team Advil-Chapstick) dominated not only her own category by rolling in 52 seconds ahead of her closes competitor, but also came within 3:30 of catching the leader of the 45-49 category race that started 10 minutes later.

"I just kept saying to myself 'keep a tempo, keep it nice and even,' and I kept asking the official what the split was and he kept saying 20, 30 and then he said 55 and I knew I just had to motor it in," Miller said. Miller completed the eight lap, 75-km race in 2:29:32.

Just two laps into the contest, Miller and Cindy Carroll (McGuire Cycling Team) rode off the front of the peloton, but every time a break developed, they were quickly reabsorbed.

"With two laps to go, Cindy attacked on the climb on the back side of the course - I was watching her all the day, I knew she was the girl to watch - so we got away until about three kilometres to go and she started to die," Miller said. "I thought 'this is it' and just kept going."

Miller also won the Best Overall title for her category.

Tracy Huber (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Flyers) picked up her second national title of this Festival with her win in the women's 45-49 category, along with the Best Overall title in the master women's 45-49 category.

Earlier in the day, Thurlow Rogers (Newbury Park, Calif. / Sonance/Specialized) took the master men's 45-49 road race crown ahead of 61-riders in the 88-km race - nearly three minutes ahead of Clint Chase (Seattle, Wash. / Byrne Specialty Gases) who finished second.

"I got away from the field early in the second lap on the downhill, bridged across to the lead group to where there were three of us, including my teammate Tim Black (Irvine, Calif. / Sonance/Specialized). Tim was kind of hurting there at the end so I had to leave him. Hopefully he can snag them at the end," Rogers said, watching the conclusion of his race.

Rogers picked up the Best Overall title for the masters men 45-49.

The first race of the day, however, seemed more like a test of endurance as a field of 64-riders dwindled with each passing kilometre in the 88-km masters' men 40-44 race.

With 9km left to go, five riders broke away from the remnants of the peloton with Dirk Pohlmann leading the group. Pohlmann beat Ramon Benitez (Glenwood, Md. / Hydromax/MI) to the line, but Pohlmann was later disqualified for not being entered in the race. Benitez was awarded first-place with his time of 2:31:21, as well as the Best Overall title for his age category.
