Stars still shine at lower key race

While the northern classics get into full swing, and the Vuelta al Pais Vasco attracts the other top teams this week, the Circuit de la Sarthe-Pays de Loire in France provides a lower key alternative for some top pros to work on their race fitness. Ivan Basso (CSC) and Michael Rogers (T-Mobile) are among the biggest stars present, as Jan Ullrich had to miss the race because of an injured knee. Gerolsteiner has sent a strong squad with Stefan Schumacher, Michel Rich, Georg Totschnig and Robert Forster - all quality riders.

The four day race has five stages, with a split stage on day two including an 8.8 km time trial. The first stage is from Mouilleron Le Captif to Saint Mars La Jaille over 193 km, and is one more suited to the sprinters. Stage 2a is a 93.8 km leg between Saint Mars La Jaille and Angers, and is followed by the time trial in Angers. The third stage is between Angers and Ernee, over 188.3 km, and the race finishes with a 184.4 km stage between Ernee and Le Mans, finishing with three ascents of the côte rue de Gazonfier (300m at 18%).
