Kuyckx wins three man sprint

Belgian rider Jan Kuyckx has won the penultimate stage of the Wiesbauer Tour in a three man breakaway. The Vlaanderen-T Interim rider beat Dutchman Koos Moerenhout (Lotto-Domo) and Italian Massimiliano Mori (Domina Vacanze) at the end of the 195 km stage between St. Veit an der Glan and Bad Radkersburg. Tom Steels (Landbouwkrediet) led the bunch home in fourth place, while race leader Cadel Evans (T-Mobile) finished 31st and kept hold of the yellow jersey with just one more flat stage to come.
"I am very satisfied with how this race has gone," said Evans. "Here in Austria I celebrated my first pro win after swapping the mountain bike for the road bike. It's even nicer to repeat the success at the same place. Now we just have to make sure that T-Mobile takes the final victory home in Vienna."
How it unfolded

The sixth stage included a short trip into Slovenia via the Radlpass, a second category 5 km climb averaging over 10%. Despite a number of attacks, the field stayed together until the first sprint at Mittlern (km 41), won by David Kopp (Lamonta) from Petr Hermann (Team Hervis Apo Sport) and Harald Morscher (Volksbank). That gave Kopp the equal lead in the sprints competition together with Pascal Hungerbühler (Volksbank), although the latter will wear the sprints jersey for tomorrow's final stage.
At 50 km, shortly after the sprint, three riders attacked: Kuyckx, Moerenhout and Mori, and since none of them were too close to Evans on GC, they were allowed to go clear. The trio rapidly increased its advantage over the T-Mobile led field, and it was 5'45 on the Radlpass, where Moerenhout took the points ahead of Mori and Kuyckx. Paolo Valoti was fourth over the climb, dangling a minute in front of the main field, while mountains leader Tomas Konecny (T-Mobile) took fifth and kept his jersey.

On the next climb of the Karnerberg (km 122), it was again Kuyckx who was first ahead of Mori and Moerenhout, with the field now 6 minutes back. The lead reached 9'40 with 50 km to go, which put Moerenhout in the virtual yellow jersey, and that was the signal for T-Mobile to start chasing.
Chase they did, bringing back the leaders to 7'55 with 35 km to go, 4'00 with 20 km to go, and eventually 1'30 at the finish. Moerenhout tried an attack with 10 km left, but was unable to shake Mori and Kuyckx, and the trio reached the finish intact, where Kuyckx proved that he was easily the best sprinter by taking the stage win.
Tomorrow marks the final stage of the Wiesbauer Tour, a flat circuit race around Vienna's ring road. If things go according to plan, Tom Steels should win the stage and Evans the tour - the second time in his career that the Australian has won this race.
