Simeoni wins with late attack

An attack in the final 3 kilometres of the fifth stage of the Wiesbauer Tour has brought success to Filippo Simeoni (Domina Vacanze), who held off the peloton by 3 seconds. The 40-strong field was led in by Austrian Harald Morscher (Volksbank Ideal) and German David Kopp (Lamonta). Race leader Cadel Evans (T-Mobile) finished 25th in the same time and kept the yellow jersey.
How it unfolded

The fifth stage started in Lienz shortly after 11:00am in sunny 29 degree conditions. Immediately, the riders had to climb that Cat. 2 Iselsberg, an 8 km climb averaging close to 7%. As soon as the climb started, so did the attacks with Popovych and Obwaller the first to try. But T-Mobile kept things under control and it was Nico Sijmens (Landbouwkrediet) who crossed the summit first ahead of mountains leader Tomas Konecny (T-Mobile), Mita Mahoric (Perutnina), and Australians Paul Crake (Corratec Austria Arboe) and Cadel Evans (T-Mobile).
On the long descent that followed, a group of four riders got away: Rory Sutherland (Rabobank), Francesco Secchiari (Domina Vacanze), Stefan Schumacher (Team Lamonta) and Matteo Cappe (Formaggi Pinzolo Fiave). The quartet did not present a big threat to the yellow jersey and were able to get nine minutes lead by kilometre 66. But with over 100 km still to race, T-Mobile kept a tight rein on the situation and began to gradually pull the four riders back in the heat of the afternoon.

After 113 kilometres, the gap was 7'30 to the leaders but as rain came down in the latter part of the stage to cool things off, the quartet was caught with 16 km to go, having been in front for 138 km. The last obstacle of the day was the Cat. 3 climb of Zensweg Höhe, which came at 8 km to go, and second placed GC rider Michele Scarponi (Domina Vacanze) launched an attack to try and surprise Evans. But it was unsuccessful, and the climbing points were taken by Mahoric ahead of Konecny and Valoti.
The peloton had split over the climb with 40 riders remaining in front, and Filippo Simeoni took advantage of the situation to attack with 3 km to go. The Domina Vacanze rider was able to hold off the field into St. Veit an der Glan to win by 3 seconds, succeeding where his teammate Scarponi had failed.
Tomorrow's sixth stage from St. Veit an der Glan to Bad Radkersburg (195 km) should present few problems for Evans and his team, although there are a couple of climbs near the halfway point that could make life interesting.
