Inclement weather didn't spoil the racing on Day 3 of the Colorado Cyclist Classic today, with Health Net/Maxxis' Mike Jones and Mike Sayers teaming up in the latter stages of the race to give Jones an emphatic stage victory. The women's race was equally animated with Katrina Grove (Rona), Kim Anderson (T-Mobile) and Chrissy Ruiter (Team Basis) finishing five minutes ahead of the field and Grove taking the overall lead at the end of the day.

Jones gave full credit to Sayers and his Health Net/Maxxis team after the race, saying: "I'm an unproven rider and for him [Sayers] to do that was pretty awesome. It was incredible to have Mike riding for me.

"Thanks to the team. These guys are great - this is the best time of my life. To win the race today and come through for Mike, after all he had done for me today, was the greatest feeling in the world," Jones added.

Today's stage consisted of an eight-mile loop that the men completed 10 times (the women doing eight laps) for a total of 80 miles. An break of three containing Aaron Olson (Ofoto-Colavita), Burke Swindlehurst (Navigator Insurance CT) and Mike Jones (Health Net/Maxxis) flew away early on, but with Dan Bowman (TIAA-CREF/5280), third placed overall at the start of the day, missing the move, his TIAA-CREF/5280 team rode hard tempo most of the day until the trio were caught with two circuits remaining.

The regrouping sparked an immediate counterattack by Health Net/Maxxis's Mike Sayers, which was closely followed by another three-man move containing Navigators' Jeff Louder and two of the day's earlier protagonists, Aaron Olson (Ofoto-Colavita) and Mike Jones (Health Net/Maxxis). The trio caught Sayers shortly thereafter, and with Health Net/Maxxis holding the upper hand, Sayers began working for team-mate Jones, who was clearly on a superb day. Explained Jones, "When the break was caught, Louder countered and Olson and I went with him. We caught Mike Sayers and Mike told me to save myself for the finish."

The quartet stayed together until the final climb of Devil's Gulch, and although neither of the Health Net duo were able to rid themselves of Olson and Louder, Jones had enough left in the tank to take a comfortable stage win, Louder and Olson finishing second and third respectively.

With the peloton coming in 38 seconds down, the overall lead remained unchanged, overnight leader Will Frischkorn (Ofoto-Colavita) continuing to hold on to his slender five second margin over Danny Pate (Health Net/Maxxis) and 1'42 over young Dan Bowman (TIAA-CREF/5280) going into the weekend.

In the women's field, Grove and Anderson now have over three minutes advantage on third placed Ruiter, with Kori Seehafer (Team Rio Grande) and Mari Holden now sitting at 3'29" and 3'53" respectively.
