On the penultimate stage of the Colorado Cyclist Classic, overnight leaders Will Frischkorn (Ofoto-Colavita) and Katrina Grove (Team Rio Grande) held firm despite encountering strong opposition from Health Net/Maxxis and T-Mobile respectively, with Frischkorn not only holding on, but taking his second stage win. Both riders appear set to assume overall race honours as the five-day event concludes tomorrow with the Boulder Park Criterium.

After four days of foul weather, warm temps and sunshine finally came out to greet the riders for Saturday's 84/56 mile Horsetooth Road Race. A 14-mile circuit situated west of Fort Collins, the race begins abruptly with a challenging 2-mile climb up the first hogback, moving north along the shores of Horsetooth Reservoir, then back down and along the west edge of Ft. Collins before returning to the finish line outside Hughes Stadium.

With just five seconds separating first (Will Frischkorn, Ofoto-Colavita) and second (Danny Pate, Health Net/Maxxis) on GC in the men's race, Health Net were keen to stir things up to test race leader Frischkorn's legs and nerves. After much trying, a break of four finally departed the peloton; in the move were: yesterday's stage winner Mike Jones (Health Net/Maxxis), Jon Tarkington and Dirk Friel (Vitamin Cottage) and Andy Bajadali (Ofoto-Colavita), with Jones the highest-placed rider overall at 5'50 behind Frischkorn. However, with Bajadali receiving a free ride and TIAA-CREF/5280 keen to protect Dan Bowman's podium position, the break's advantage never posed a serious threat despite the efforts of the remaining three.

The situation continued this way until the final lap when Health Net/Maxxis, not to be discouraged, sent Chris Wherry up the road in pursuit, who successfully bridged the gap with less than 10 miles remaining to form a five-man lead group. Sensing danger, Frischkorn's combined Ofoto-Colavita squad marshalled their troops, and with Aaron Olson, Andrew Bajadali and Dominique Perras at the helm, a 15-man chase group soon formed and caught the quintet shortly before the finish.

Unperturbed and determined to put Danny Pate in the lead at the end of the day, Health Net/Maxxis began a mini lead-out train normally reserved for Gord Fraser or Greg Henderson with Moninger, Wherry and Jones setting up Pate for the sprint. But when Pate hesitated, Pate paid dearly, as Frischkorn outsprinted each and all to take his second stage win and perhaps more importantly, a much-needed time bonus, the Ofoto-Colavita rider now enjoying a 25 second buffer over Pate going into tomorrow's final stage.

"Today I got lucky. I was on Danny's wheel and I jumped at 175 meters to go. Moninger, Wherry and Mike Jones did a phenomenal job and five times out of ten, Pate would have won," said an emphatic Frischkorn post-race.

Not forgetting the efforts of his team-mates, Frischkorn added: "My team has been incredible this week, especially considering that we are a composite team. The guys have been great."

In the women's race, the difficulty of the course provided T-Mobile with enough impetus to try and dislodge Katrina Grove (Team Rio Grande) from the race lead, but Grove stood firm and held on to her narrow seven second advantage over Kim Anderson (Team T-Mobile). A break of four riders did succeed, however, and in the end, it was Rio Grande v. T-Mobile once again, with Lynn Gaggioli (Team Rio Grande) taking out the sprint from Lara Kroepsch (Team T-Mobile) and team-mate Katheryn Curi to cap off a solid day for the Rio Grande girls.
