Frischkorn kids his way to massive lead

Will Frischkorn won the first mass-start stage of the Colorado Cyclist Classic today, the 87-mile Glen Haven and Drake Road Race. Riding for the combination team being fielded by Colavita and Ofoto, Frischkorn attacked after just 100 metres, taking with him Danny Pate (Health Net), Dan Bowman (TIAA-CREF/5280) and Eddy Gragus (Trek/VW).
Gragus dropped off the pace before the feed zone after 20 miles, but the remaining three worked together strongly and, in the face of apparent indifference from the peloton, built a lead that reached 11 and a half minutes.
Frischkorn said afterwards that he'd only been kidding when he attacked so early, but the peloton had just let him go so he took the opportunity. The crucial time was made on the climbs, as he explained: "Being a local guy and having ridden that climb 50 times, I knew where to go and where the switchbacks were. We held a 5-6 minute break for quite a while and basically just rolled steady all day. Up the last climb, we had at least 8 minutes, so I knew we were going to stay away."

Frischkorn broke away from his companions in the last stages to solo across the line over size minutes clear of the peloton. Now, he has to defend the leader jersey for the rest of the weekend.
"Its going to be interesting to see what happens in the next few days," said Frischkorn. "Both of the next days' circuit races are hard, but, fortunately we all have over 5 minutes on the rest of the field. We have a strong team and if we are smart, we have a good chance. We'll see what we can do."

- The race was filled with constant up and downs with very little flat roads throughout the day.
- The area around Estes Park is dotted with picturesque lakes and rock formations. The women didn't stop to sight-see.
- The rollers on the Peak to Peak are a good way to stay warm during the recent cold spell in Colorado.
- The men and women were greeted with cold weather and rain up on the Peak to Peak Highway.

- The men's field appears relaxed early in the race. The field let the winning break of 3 get up to a 20 minute gap, and could only bring it back to under 7 minutes before the finish.
- There's a reason the Peak to Peak Highway is a National Scenic Byway. This is a regular training route for many of Boulder's pro cyclists.
