Soeder wins her first stage, Razenkova takes yellow

Austrian Christine Soeder (Team Stuttgart) won today's storm ridden stage of the Thuringen Rundfhart after bridging up to a break of two riders with her teammate Suzanne Bayer. Soeder took the three person sprint in the town of Greiz to win the stage, but it was Russian rider Yulia Razenkova (Velodames Colnago) who gained the most from the break today as her second place earned her the leader's jersey going into stage four.
Ex-duathlete, Soeder continues a successful year on the road with her main result being second place at the German National Time Trial championships earlier this year.
How it unfolded
As the riders lined up in Hermsdorf for the relatively flat 106km stage to Greiz, a hot summer day turned grey and the winds picked up some force to show a storm coming. Two Colnago Velodames riders, Razenkova and Olga Zabelinskaia used the massive crosswinds to their advantage and attacked to gain a convincing gap on the field. Nurnberger's Petra Rossner began a steady chase in defense of the Judith Arndt's yellow jersey and held the gap steady before two Stuttgart riders attacked the field and bridged to the break.
The foursome then gained momentum and the gap extended out to 40seconds with the cross winds continuing to cause havoc and the storm hitting, resulting in riders having to ride through four inches of rain. With the break beginning to look dangerous for Nurnberger, Margaret Hemsley, Madeleine Lindberg and Henka Kupfernagel set the pace at the front with Powerplate Bik joining in the chase.
The final climb at 10km to go was one that was going to be a big decider in the end as the road went up to a 12% grade for 2.5km. Suzanne Bayer didn't manage to hold on to the break up this climb, but had done her work for her teammate Soeder. The remaining three managed to stay away till the finish line with Soeder taking the win from Zabelinskaia and Razenkova.
Behind, the climb had managed to split the peloton, as the climber picked up the pace. A group of ten riders finished at 51", with Arndt coming in 9th, losing her yellow jersey, but sitting in second place only 37" behind in general classification.
Tomorrow's stage will see more of the same technical undulating roads as the race heads from Greiz to Schleiz over 103.0 km
