Ljungskog wins, Polkanova takes yellow

Newly signed member of the Bik-Powerplate team, Suzanne Ljungskog, won today's stage of Thuringen Rundfhart edging out her rival after a 30km, two person break away. Ljunskog joined Velodames Colnago rider (Valentina Polkanova) mid way through the race in quest of moving up on GC and the pair managed to hold off the chasing field. Mirroring yesterday's stage however it was not the winner of the stage who gained the most out of this break away but second place getter. Polkanova now wears the yellow leader's jersey that was worn today by her teammate Yulia Rasenkova.
The 103km stage from Greiz to Scheiz was not hampered by storms today as riders faced a pleasant sunny days with a slight wind. The race was aggressive from the start with many of the non - GC contenders trying their hands for a stage win. Early aggressors were T-Mobile, Farm Frites and the Dutch National Team as well as Road Runner - Guerciotti Cycling. Nothing managed to get away however until the mountain sprint at 72km when Powerplate Bik led their team leader Ljungskog into the climb. Ljungskog attacked and Polkanova was the only rider who could go with her. The pair crested the mountain in the lead and held onto it over the remaining hilly and undulating terrain to the finish line, finishing 51" ahead of the chasing group of 26 riders. The move was perfect for Polkanova and the Velodames Colnago team as they already had the leader's jersey on Razenkova, and Polkanova was already ahead of Ljunskog in the General classification.
Behind the break the mountain managed to split the field with Katia Longhin (Mixed Team) taking the 26 person sprint for third place. In fourth was Judith Arndt (Nurnberger), the break away of today now moving her back into fourth place in GC overall.
Ljungskog's win moves her up significantly into third place overall, only six seconds behind Polkanova. Tomorrow's time trial will be the test to decide whether or not there will be yet another change in the wearer of the yellow jersey going into the final tough stage of the tour, however not before the morning stage of 73km stage from Schleiz to Gera. Yet more storms are predicted tomorrow afternoon in the Thuringen region.
