Beltman takes stage, Arndt keeps yellow

Chantal Beltman (Mixed Team) won today's tough stage of Thuringen Rhundafhrt when she sprinted from the break of 14 riders in the stage from Zeulenroda to Hermsdorf.
With another storm just passing in the former East Germany and the roads being relatively dry, riders set of to face the second stage of what is always an unpredictable tour. The courses are always up and down and very technical with many corners and cobbled sections going through the small towns of the Thuringen area.
An early break formed in the 127km stage consisting of the yellow jersey Judith Arndt (Nurnberger) who earned the jersey when her team rode to victory in the team time trial of stage one. T-Mobile powered the break recognising their advantage of having two riders up there in Kimberly Bruckner and Kirsten Armstrong. Arndt rode tucked in at the back of the break, but later as Valentina Polkenova (Velodames Colnago) and Suzanne Ljungskog (Powerplate Bik) bridged up to the break with Dede Barry (T-Mobile) and Rachel Heal (British National Team) it became clear that this break had the chance to stay away, Nurnberger was not happy with the situation as Arndt was outnumbered.
In the break were three riders from Velodames Colnago, Polkanova, Joulia Martissova and Yulia Razenkova, and three T-Mobile riders in Bruckner, Barry and Armstrong. Also in the break were Sara carrigan and Ljungskog (Powerplate Bik), Arenda Grimberg (Farm Frites Hartol), Beltman, Heal and Francis Newsted (British National Team) and Daniela Kenty (Red Bull Team).
In an attempt to get someone up to help Arndt, Nurnberger began attacking out of the peloton and at one stage it looked like Trixie Worrack would get there with Olivia Gollan (Powerplate Bik) on her wheel. However without the help of Gollan and with the high speed of the break, Worrack didn't make it and the two dropped back again to the bunch.
This left Nurnberger with only one option and that was to chase to break down. With four teammates in the bunch the Nurnberger team began gaining time on the break and by the base of the final climb with 40km to go they had reeled it in to within 15 seconds, however not for long. A rider crashing in the bunch taking out Kupfernagel, saw three of the Nurnberger girls go down in domino effect and the chase lose momentum. The gap quickly stretched out and by the finish line the leaders had over six minutes on the field.
In the final sprint, Ljungskog put in a big effort to lead out her teammate Carrigan, but her attempts were also tampered as a rider t-boned her and broke six of her spokes. On the line it was Beltman who took the honours from fellow Dutchy, Grimberg, with Barry taking third place.
Race leader Arndt managed to finish safely in seventh place keeping the yellow jersey going into stage three. Sitting in the next three places in the General Classification are the three Velodames Colnago riders who are in a good position to be a threat to the Nurnberger lead.
Tomorrow's stage travels 106km from Hermdorf to Greiz.
