Merv Byfield has won the final road race of the season. The race was held in very warm conditions on a punishing, undulating course that proved too difficult for several competitors. The first rider away in the handicap event was youngster Wade Longworth, followed by Larry Ross, Stan Baker, and Dani Longworth. Several minutes back, Byfield, Laurie Longworth, Andy Bennett, and Steve Ware were away and wasted no time in cranking up the pace. Dave Berglund and Phil Diesel starting from scratch swooped past Raymond Loly and Darren Lee, as Geoff Marshall and Baker called it a day.

Attacking riding from Byfield and Ware was costly for Bennet and Longworth, who were feeling the pinch at the 25km mark. However, after 64km, Merv Byfield finished the stronger to lead Steve Ware to the line with Dave Berglund three minutes back, cruising to third.

The handicap event was a lead-up race to the Stan Fennell Spring Handicap this Sunday, October 22, starting at 9am. Earlier in the week at the Bonser Time Trial over 16kms, Phil Diesel clocked an impressive 24.28 minute ride to claim maximum points in Race 1. Darryl Harris claimed 2nd with a time of 25.31 minutes. Joe Cox was third, finishing in under 30 minutes.
