Eelmore Circuit races, August 16, 2006

The agiskoviner riders went into tonight's race with a plan - to attack as often as possible and to make sure at least one rider went with every other aggressive move. This seemed to work well as any group that got away contained someone in light blue, however, as is the norm at Eelmore in the 3/4's, no-one really stayed away for long until Chris Wood (www.agiskoviner.com) chipped off the front with 3 laps remaining and just managed to hold on for the win - a fantastic result for him. Leading in the bunch was Tristan Natolie, also from agiskoviner, just pipping a disappointed Sam McCurdy (Swindon RC), who had punctured earlier while away with Natolie, effectively ending a potentially race winning move. Gareth Dickinson (www.agiskoviner.com) captured 4th with a fine sprint, which just goes to show that training does pay off, if you bother doing any (you know who you are TN and GD!!!)

Young Elliott Storey (PCA Ciclos Unos) always rides up into the senior event when he comes down to Eelmore, and as usual, just manages to miss the top 10 placings, but he always rides valiantly with great determination, and always with lots of vocal and moral support from his dad. He's one for the future, a really bright young rider with a good personality and sensible head, so watch out for him coming by you in the not too distant future!

It was also nice to see the VC Meudon "gang of ringers" miss out on the top placings this week. They stalk the bunch like a pack of baying wolves, waiting for weaknesses, but we have you sussed out now, so you'll have to think of new ideas. Maybe disguising some of your first cat's as older "gentlemen" and blagging an entry into the lower cat event might sort you out. Personally, I believe they are nothing without the mighty Keith Brooks riding and guiding them along. What do you think? Answers on a postcard coupled with a signed, blank cheque will gain you plenty of favouritism in the next episode of Eelmore weekly!

Whatever possesses Paul Pickup (www.agiskoviner.com/LiphookCycles) to attack in the first few laps, go away by himself and stay away for the rest of the event, with 15 fighting fit riders, some with great legs, chasing, is really beyond me! When questioned after the race, his reason was that he was training for a forthcoming 2 up time trial with some rider who is rather formidable. He's running scared of taking a real kicking, apparently, so is making sure the power training is up at full throttle. I also hear that this pairing might be going for some competition records on a tandem sometime in the future, so it'll be interesting to see how it all pans out!

Anyway, back to the race. Paul was out front and there were several attempts to get across, bring him back or form small breakaways, but none lasted until around 8 laps to go when Adrian Goatley (www.agiskoviner.com/LiphookCycles) and Craig Peter (VC Meudon) got away together. No matter how hard James Millard chased, he was usually sat on, so it came to nothing, and several riders commented on it being rather negative, but sometimes that happens when riding for a team result. Jason Edwards (Wildside RT) was also strong and also frustrated, but they (Wildside) are just as used to dishing out team tactics, so what goes around often comes around in cycling I suppose.

After Paul had won comfortably, Adrian and Craig were left to battle it out for 2nd and 3rd, however in the run up to the line, Craig came out of his cleat and that was that. It was a real pity as he was going strong and had been sharing the workload with Adrian fairly, so it would have been better to contest it in more equitable circumstances, but such is life. In the bunch gallop, come back man Lee Smith (www.agiskoviner.com) showed the rest what a deft sprint he can produce, winning comfortably over the likes of Justin Hoy, Tim Elverson and Jason Edwards

Youths

A much better youth turn-out this week saw six sign on for the 20 minutes plus one lap event. With riding up in mind, the youngsters generally take it easy until the last 5 minutes, but the results always reflect who was strongest on the evening. Good wins in their relevant age categories by Elliott Storey, Tommy Garland (i-team.co.uk) and Katie Metalli (Palmer Park Velo)
