Results and Reports from CanadaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Tour de White Rock Hill ClimbWhite Rock, BC, July 15, 2006BC Superweek got off to a flying start on Friday night with the Superboy of BC cycling soaring past everyone to win the Tour de White Rock hill climb, the opening event of the richest week of bike racing in Canada. 22-year-old Cam Evans of Tswwassen made a successful defense of the race he won in 2004. Last year he was recovering from a broken kneecap and was unable to defend his title. Friday night in front of a large crowd lining the 700 meter course, Evans proved his winning form is back and he's still the king of the hills in White Rock. The rising start of the Langley-based Symmetrics team won the qualifying heat and then left everyone behind on the steep climb up Buena Vista Avenue to win the showdown between the top five finalists. He made it look a lot easier than it felt. "This is one of the most painful races you can do," he said. "It's so short and steep that you have to go as hard as you can all the time. In most races when you go up steep hills you may give it 85% but here it has to be 100% or else. I'm going to feel it in the morning but so will everyone else so it shouldn't hurt me too much in the road race." Ryan Hopping of Fort McMurray, riding for ERTC Redbike finished 2nd. Masi-Adobe's Jordan Guenette of Vancouver finished 3rd. It was a night of firsts in the women's race. A former speed skater from Regina, Alexandra Wrubleski won the first hill climb she'd ever raced in her first start in a BC Superweek event. She credits her victory to a year of high altitude training in the mountains and hills around her new hometown of Calgary. She won the women's race with ease, cruising across the finish line a comfortable distance ahead of 2nd place finisher Leah Goldstein of Vancouver. It was a night of firsts for Goldstein as well. She had never before raced the tough hill climb in White Rock and now knows why. "It's agonizing because it's steep and just keeps getting steeper. It hurts right now but I'll be ok for tomorrow (Sunday) morning," said Goldstein, the favourite to win the road race which begins at 8am on Marine Drive in White Rock. Abbotsford's Alison Testroete took 3rd just ahead of Laval, Quebec's Joelle Numainville who set a new women's course record of 1.56.07 in the qualifying heat.
