Results and Reports from CanadaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews BC SuperweekTour de White Rock, July 17, 2006Cam Evans and his pals painted White Rock yellow this weekend. The bright lemon yellow and black jerseys of the Langley-based Symmetrics team became a familiar sight on top of the victory podium with Evans, a 22-year-old from Tsawwassen, winning the Hill Climb and finishing second in the Peace Arch New Road Race behind team-mate Andrew Pinfold of Victoria. On Monday night after a third straight day of sunshine and perfect temperatures Evans, the reigning Canadian National Criterium champion and Symmetrics went for the sweep, trying to complete the triple play. They made certain they had riders at the front in every break in a 60 lap, 60 kilometre race around one of the rare Criterium circuits that includes a short hill climb and even shorter downhill sprint to the finish line. Langley's Svein Tuft, the Canadian Time Trial champion, tried a one-man breakaway 15 laps into the race. He dropped back and other riders took turns attacking and leading for a few laps before dropping back into the pack. With 10 laps to go Symmetrics was perfectly poised for another big finish placing seven riders in the top 10. Five laps from the finish line and nearly an hour into the race, everyone was still playing it cautiously, waiting for someone else to make a closing move. It was Tuft who put his head down, grimaced and shoved it into overdrive, taking off by himself with two laps to go. "I was suffering like nothing else on those last two laps," he said. "I wasn't sure I could hang on or not." On the bell lap he still wasn't certain but he'd widened the lead to a dozen seconds on the defending White Rock Crit champion, Hilton Clarke. No one would get any closer as the yellow jerseys swept across the finish line one-two again with Tuft picking up the victory and his teammate Pinfold, 2006 White Rock Road race champion, wrapping up the men's Omnium for best combined results by taking 2nd ahead of Ontario's Ryan Roth in 3rd. A perennial pre-race favourite at BC Superweek, Tuft had been 2nd in the Tour de Delta road race in 2001 and 2nd in Gastown but had never won a Superweek race until now. "For some reason I've always come into Superweek a little flat and a little raced out every year. I changed my training this season concentrating more on intensity and less on spending hours on the bike. It paid off. This is great. I've always wanted to win here. Superweek is awesome and so important to us. This is our hometown. This is where we want to win for our fans and our sponsors. It's where everything comes from." Symmetrics had three riders in the top four. Evans was not one of them. After taking part in the early attacks and breakaways, the National Crit champion finished 29th. In the women's race, no one ever figured out how to beat Canadian Road Race and Time Trial champion, Alexandra Wrubleski on a weekend when she said she "didn't feel all that great, not a lot of energy." The 22-year-old from Calgary left everyone else feeling ill after the way she dominated them, winning the Hill Climb and Road Race with ease. She expected more trouble and difficulty in the Criterium. "Crits aren't my favourite but I like this one a little more because it has a nice uphill climb halfway through. I also had a little extra a motivation because I didn't want to lose my title," she said referring to the Omnium championship for the point totals in all three races. She won that as easily as she won the Criterium, resting at the front of the pack for 29 of the 30 laps around the one kilometer course. She never led until she made her move on the hill going up the backside and pulling away to finish the 30 km race in 40 minutes and 53.3 seconds. Two BC riders joined her on the podium, with Stacey Spencer of Salmon Arm taking 2nd and Alison Testroete of Abbotsford finishing 3rd. "Next to winning the National championships earlier this year, this is the best weekend of my career," said Wrubleski. "This is a big race with great courses, great atmosphere and great crowds. "Wrubleski will try to make it four for four in BC Superweek when she races in the Tour de Gastown on Wednesday, July 19.
