Carnegie Caulfield Cycling Club

Glenvale Crescent Criteriums, Sunday, October 15, 2006

With 13,000 riders tackling Melbourne's massive 'Around the Bay in Day' fundraising recreational 210km ride, a small field was expected for the second race at Glenvale Crescent, so organisers were pleasantly surprised with a turn out well over 200. The overnight forecast of showers had been upgraded to predict a fine morning, and although one brief shower did fall during the A and C Grade races, it wasn't enough to affect racing.

The A Grade race was run at a very high, but relatively constant pace, allowing riders at the tail end of the mammoth field a surprisingly easy ride. At the pointy end, however, a succession of small groups were burying themselves in an effort to escape, with the move that ultimately succeeded containing opening-week winner Damon De Angelis, local favourite Warren Knevitt (O'Mara Cycles), Wayne Flint (Aboc Cycle Coaching), Matt Shea (Inexa - Naughty Boy), Daniel Braunsteins (Richmond Cyclery) and Barcelona Olympian Robert Crowe (BikeNOW). Combining well, the break's margin increased until they were out of sight of the main bunch, which is often the point at which the bunch gives up the chase, and the break goes on to lap the field. Today, the chase redoubled, and with five minutes to race the margin was back to within a handful of seconds. A number of riders attempted to cross the gap, but the only one to succeed was Dylan Newell (Flemington Cycles), who had picked up the $1000 win at the support race for the Herald Sun Tour finale the day before. On the final three laps, the bunch made a concerted effort to get back on terms, but the escapees prevailed, with the win going to big Crowe, ahead of De Angelis and Knevitt.

Attacks were also the order of the day in B Grade, with Grant Matthews typically aggressive early on. 'The Bricky' initially escaped with Cam Rotter (Burnley Finance), and later with Gary Simondson and Grant Edmonds, but the most threatening move was started by last week's C Grade winner, Martin Bole. Bole was initially joined by Gareth Martyn, James Sampson and Tim White, with James Attard bridging a lap later. When the field was given three to go, the bunch surged closer but the attackers were still five seconds clear at the start of the final lap. Nick Palecek (Richmond Cyclery) powered away as the inevitable capture was made and held on for a good win, while Ian Mathews (Burnley Finance) led the bunch home ahead of Tony Mason and Clint McDonnell. In the women's division, Nikki Matthews sprinted well to take the cash ahead of Jenny King (Spoke'n) and Lisa Friend (Drapac Porsche).

Matt Bishop attacked the C Grade bunch half a lap from home to take an impressive win in C Grade, while Sebastian Hales recovered from an early fall to sprint home in second place ahead of Claudio Abreu and Troy Baker. The Malaysian women impressed in the women's section, with Azean Alias crossing the line fifth overall to take the top women's prize ahead of Clare Vlahopolous and team mate Urecca Leuw.

Visiting Bruswick juniors Ben MacNee and Ren Clavey were too quick for the D Grade bunch, with Laurie Lovelock making a late charge to split the pair in the dash to the line. Radelle Berriman (Terry Hammond Cycles) was the first woman home, ahead of Denise Bennett (Burnley Finance) and Meg Russell.

Carnegie Caulfield Criteriums continue every Sunday at Glenvale Crescent (Melways map 80B2). B, D and E Grades start at 9am, while A and C Grade ride at 10am.
All holders of current Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget to bring your license or receipt!), and non-members can have a go by taking out a day license for $20. 2007 licenses are now available at all CCCC events.

For first time competitors and the younger juniors, Tokyo Olympian Mick Hollingsworth conducts novice racing clinics within the E Grade race at Glenvale Crescent. For further details, go to www.carnegiecycling.com.au.
