Riverland Cycling Club

Victoria, Tuesday November 14, 2006

The Riverland Cycling Club grows stronger ever week. After lasts weeks turn out this seasons Criterium series looked promising, club members were delighted to see another big night of racing as 27 riders nominated for the event.

Tuesday night's Criterium had enthusiasm, excitement and for many high expectations. The grades all have either a promoted club member or an entirely new rider, that being said all on the night seemed to gel together extremely well.

Matthew Benson's form from last week continued, even though he was promoted to A Grade, he was persistent with his attacking up the back straight and claimed third for the grades 45 minute race. Lee Stevens and Hamish MacKirdy completed their race in the usual fashion, a sprint finish with a very proud Stevens claiming line honours.

Although there may have been an incident during the race, Greg Hatcher showed no signs of easing off as he competed in the bunch sprint to determine B Grades placing's. The entire 40 minutes was again raced together in a strong group, the bell lap was no exception coming down to a bunch sprint to decide the winner. Lara MacKirdy claimed the victory over in-form Simon Woods and Greg Hatcher.

C Grade's Marcus Whitting finished strong winning the bunch sprint; Kym Ferber, Craig Spilsbury, Claire Treilibs and Peter Weston pushed for the minor placing's whilst Janine Webb and Graham Butt continued to persevere with their C Grade promotion.

The return of Gordon Lawton and Ruth Butt had D Grade in a spin as 8 riders contested the 30-minute race. Aron Woosnam who is also new to the racing scene took out first place with a convincing win over his father Wayne and Megan Taylor. After giving a few tips and tricks to his fellow grade members, including youngster Kade Boase, Angelo Ylia claimed fifth behind Ralph Anderson with Lawton and Butt to follow.
