Week two at Sandown was looking like a wash out when a cool change rolled in from the bay, but the cycling gods were kind and the black clouds passed either side of the circuit, and the wind vanished, allowing racing to run as usual.

In the A Grade field, all eyes were on triple junior world champion Cameron Meyer, fresh from riding for the Australian team at the Sydney world cup, and in town for the Melbourne Cup on Wheels. Despite opening at a typically frenetic pace, the bunch stayed largely intact for most of the hour despite the best efforts of Sunday's winner Peter Barnett (SHM).

A move from Brendan Rowbotham (SHM), Will Ford (VIS) and CCCC committee man Paul Mason at three to go opened the largest margin of the evening, one which only Brett Perez and Roy Clarke (Croydon Cycleworks) were able to bridge.

The group of five crested the climb together on the final lap, only to see Perez launch the race winning attack rounding the corner before the final chicane, and cross the finish line five seconds clear, with Rowbotham overhauling Mason in the final metres to claim second.

The B Grade race looked like it would follow a similar scenario, with Russell Newnham (Pro-Motion) the early aggressor, but the bunch was always in easy striking distance of all the early attacks.

Newnham's final effort began with fifteen minutes to go, when he broke clear with Tony Mason. Powerhouses Bruce Will and Richard Cormick (Datacom - Burnley Finance) bridged across but with the final two laps approaching the field reformed, and stayed that way, allowing the sprinters to fight out the win.

Damian Bourke (Hampton Cycles) was a commanding winner in the dash to the line, with Ben Hegarty (BikeNOW) and Luke Stork best of the rest. Peta Mullens (VIS) was well up in the field to claim the women's win, ahead of Nicole Whitburn (Mainline Cycles) and Sophie Ruderman (team FBUK).

First time rider Keelan O'Hehir recorded a comfortable first up win in C Grade, and proved himself ready to go straight to B Grade. Stuart Campbell produced a great sprint to take second ahead of Ross Jones (Jones Cycles) and exciting junior Oliver Le Grice (O'Mara Cycles), while Michelle Murrell continued her dominance of the women's section.

Daniel Lewis-Toakley earned promotion to C Grade with a strong attack on the final climb which saw him finish well clear of the rest of the D Grade bunch. New-comer James Catchlove lead the bunch home, from Jay Heather (Hampton Cycles) and another C Grade bound rider, Michael Mather.

Carnegie Caulfield Criteriums continue every Sunday at Glenvale Crescent (Melways map 80B2). B, D and E Grades start at 9am, while A and C Grade ride at 10am. Twilight racing at Sandown Raceway is held on Tuesday evenings at Sandown International Raceway. Entry is via the Sandown Road gate from 6pm (Melways map 80 B6), with racing starting at 6.30pm for all grades.

All holders of current Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out a day license for $20. 2007 licenses are now available at all CCCC events. Returning riders must resume in the grade in which they last raced, unless prior arrangements are made with the handicapper.

For first time competitors and the younger juniors, Tokyo Olympian Mick Hollingsworth conducts novice racing clinics within the E Grade race at Glenvale Crescent. For further details, go to www.carnegiecycling.com.au.
