More blue skies in Melbourne saw another turn out of over 200 riders at Glenvale Crescent. The big A Grade field was quickly strung out as the strong men took advantage of the ideal conditions, and the attacks came thick and fast.

Fifteen minutes in, masters time trial specialist David Sturt (Giant/Pro-Motion) broke free, along with Brendan Rowbotham (SHM), Andrew Stalder (Promains) and leading MTB rider James Maebus (Giant). The foursome were quickly out to a twenty second advantage as the main bunch began to attack one another in attempts to reach the lead group. Peter Barnett (SHM) and Steven Robb got part way across the gap by working with Reece Van Beek and Will Wettenhall, before shaking off the other two and reaching the leaders. The final rider to cross the gap was Darren Lapthorne (Drapac Porsche), who crossed the gap alone with an impressive display at the twenty five minute mark.

Maebus wasn't able to hold the hot pace set by Lapthorne, but the six who survived began to rapidly extend their lead on the disorganised main bunch, eventually taking a lap after fifty minutes on all but Tommy Nankervis (Priority Health), Pete Johnstone (Inexa Race Frames), Anthony Smith and Damon De Angelis (both Promains) and Danny Kah, but the relentless pace saw even this strong chase group lapped with three laps remaining.

Barnett won the race with a strong attack at three to go, having the luxury of a team mate in Rowbotham to defend his position, to win by ten seconds. Stalder took a close sprint for second, just ahead of Rowbotham and Lapthorne.

B Grade saw a number of short lived attacks keep the pace high for the full hour, with the aggressors including Cam McDonald (Prime Estate), Nick Palecek (Richmond Cyclery) Grant Matthews and Cam Rotter (Datacom/Burnley Finance). A late move from Rowan Ware, Matthews, McDonald and Brianna James (The Freedom Machine) with five minutes remaining saw a swift reaction from the bunch, and the field reformed.

David Taylor (Burnley) made his case for an update to his old Burnley kit with an attack at three to go in his first race in almost a year, but was reeled in on the final lap. The bunch sprint was well taken by the A Grade bound McDonald, from Mark Gainsmith and first time B Grade rider Joshua Lose. Kerryn Charman (Inexa) recorded her first win in the women’s division, finishing ahead of James and Sophie Ruderman (Team FBUK).

Paul McMullan (Datacom/Burnley) spent most of the first half of the C Grade race off the front of the bunch, but still had plenty left to dominate the eventual bunch sprint and earn promotion to B Grade next week. David McGrath was best of the rest, leading Matt Ditchfield and Vaughan Allan across the line. Michelle Murrell won the women’s race, from Melissa Kah and Gemma Goyne (Inexa).

Alex Lockie claimed the final bunch sprint of the morning in D Grade, holding off promising junior Daniel Lewis-Toakley, Michael Mather and Paul Carnibella. Latrobe junior Shannon McCurley was the first of the big women's contingent home, taking the win ahead of Leah Paterson and Radelle Berriman.

Carnegie Caulfield Criteriums continue every Tuesday evening at Sandown Raceway. Entry is via the Sandown Road entrance (Melways map 80 B6), from 6pm, with all grades racing at 6.30. Sundays are at Glenvale Crescent (Melways map 80 B2). B, D and E Grades start at 9am, while A and C Grade ride at 10am. Twilight racing at Sandown Raceway commences on November 14 at 6pm.

All holders of current Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out a day license for $20. 2007 licenses are now available at all CCCC events. All returning riders must resume in the grade they last raced in, unless prior arrangement has been made with the handicapper.

For first time competitors and the younger juniors, Tokyo Olympian Mick Hollingsworth conducts novice racing clinics within the E Grade race at Glenvale Crescent. For further details, go to www.carnegiecycling.com.au.
