Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Illawarra Cycling ClubKen Dinnerville memorial handicap, June 18, 2006History was made when local rider Gary Mandy finished fourth for the second year in a row in a close sprint won by Ben Travers (Peleton Sports). Mandy has vowed to return next year and be on the podium. It was also fitting that the third Illawarra rider to finish was the 1980 winner Lionel Covington. Still riding strongly after his win 26 years ago, Covington is an inspiration to other members of the Club. One of the longest running bike races held in Australia the Ken Dinnerville Memorial Handicap Race was held last Sunday. The race will started and finished at Dapto High School. Roy and Noelene Clearys sponsorship of this race started 50 years ago in memory of their nephew, Ken Dinnerville, who tragically lost his life while training. Unfortunately Roy is no longer with us but Noelene continues the tradition by sponsoring the race in Kens memory. One hundred and sixty six riders, twenty three from Illawarra, faced the starter for the 92km race. The route followed Cleveland road to Avondale road then east along Avondale road to Marshal Mount road, then out to Calderwood road. The riders turned around in the parking area of the Illawarra Christian School and head back to Huntley to complete the first lap. After two more laps, out to the Christian School, the riders then enter Cleveland for the final 5km of the race. The finish line is just west of Dapto High School. Unlike some years the weather was near perfect for the race. Right from the start it was apparent that the 23minute bunch was going to put in a big effort to try and capture the victory. Local riders Lionel Covington and Bobby Krstevski combined well with the other eleven riders in their bunch to maintain a good pace. By half race distance the bunch behind had only reduced the gap between them by 30seconds. Meanwhile the scratch riders were burning up the bitumen and had caught the two bunches in front of them by the end of the second lap. The 6minute group had also closed the gap to the bunch infront when Jim Moore (Sutherland) and Blair Martin (St George) set off by themselves to join the 9minute group. A select group including Moore and Martin then formed with a few riders from the 11, 15 and 19minute bunches formed after the last climb of Marshal Mount hill. They then set off in pursuit of the race leaders the 23minute group. With only a few kilometres to the finish line the two groups joined together. The last couple of kilometres along the tough Cleveland road thinned the group out to the twenty two riders who were going to fight it out for the win. The riders came around the last bend in the road, to straighten up for the finish, six wide. Mandy was giving it his all but Travers, Calvin Smith (Randwick Botany) and Martin Bult (Sth Highlands) were too strong relegating him to fourth place. Moore crossed the line in fifth place with the next Illawarra rider Mark Davis finishing a strong sixth. Martin ended up eighth. The second group led by Covington had only just lost contact in the last two kilometres to come in just over a minute after the winner. In a hotly contested sprint for fastest time Jose Rodriguez (Colnago Caravello) just edged out ex Illawarra rider now Canberra resident John Forrest. Their time of 2:00:39 was one of the fastest ever for the course.
