A record number of 130 riders had entered the event held in memory of the Illawarra’s good member Graeme Catterall. Due the generous sponsorship from Wollongong Fencing the race boasted prize money of $1,500. Riders from as far away as Eurobodalla and Goulburn travelled up to take part in the race. With the rain holding off and the winds reduced to strong from gale force nearly all the riders that had entered were on the start line. One exception was the Club secretary, Phil Jones who was unfortunately blown off his bike in Unanderra, breaking his collar bone. There is an old saying that says when the conditions are tough the tough riders reign, that was certainly true as Richard Vollebregt, from Sth Highlands, riding off scratch left the other riders in his bunch in his wake and proceeded to ride right through all the bunches in front of him. At the end of the race he finished 1:23 behind the winning bunch that had started 7 minutes in front of him. Only two riders were able to go with him, Chad Balding Sth Highlands and Mark Davis Illawarra. The bunch that had combined best on the day swapping off turns for the duration of the race was the 13 minute bunch. With Illawarra having nine of the eighteen starters off that mark there were in the box seat. Two riders off limit gave it their all but succumbed to the conditions and the fast moving 13 min bunch to be caught with less than half a lap left in the race. Luckily the 13 min bunch didn’t ease up as the Vollebregt train was closing fast. As the winning group rounded the corner into the finishing straight there were five riders abreast. Jason Johnson held off the Nowra due of David Morris and Damien Mason for a well deserved victory. The next across the line were Illawarra’s Andrew Rutty, Andrew Stewart and Dean Kelly. Davis led the select group containing Vollebregt across the line for tenth place. Gavin Drury recorded fourth fastest time on the day. Johnson boosted him bank account considerably also collecting the first Illawarra finisher and first Masters rider home. The prizes were presented by Graeme’s wife Lila, son Colin with his wife Jenny. Johnson is now equal third in the Interclub series.
