Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Carnegie Caulfield Cycling ClubSandown, Melbourne, January 24, 2006By Mal Sawford Just over 200 riders this week at Sandown, with blue skies and a warm northerly
wind to make things tough for riders around the famous car racing track. The huge B Grade bunch made it virtually impossible for breakaways to succeed,
quickly chasing anyone who dared attack, and in the swarm towards the line,
David O'Leary wound things up nicely, allowing his son Jake to power over the
top claim the win that moves him to A Grade from Hampton Cycles team mate Damian
Jones. A clash of handlebars took Josh Morrison (Burnley Finance) down spectacularly,
while further back in the bunch Apryl Eppinger (VIS) hugged the barriers to
flash home ahead of Mary Rogers (Kathy Watt's Personal Training) and Nikki Matthews. Mitchell Gregory and Jason Swackhamer had their final D Grade rides after breaking
away from the pack at two to go and taking the top two places. Gregory pulled
away leading up to the bell and was never threatened, but Swackhamer was clearly
suffering as he entered the home straight at not much more than walking pace,
with the bunch looming very quickly behind him. CCCC's next race is the Karak Classic - the exciting opportunity to race on
part of the Commonwealth Games road course on Sunday January 29. Full details,
including course map, are now up on the Club's website. Carnegie Caulfield's twice weekly Criteriums are on Sunday mornings (except
January 29) and Tuesday evenings. Sundays are at Glenvale Crescent (Melways
map 80B2) with new start times for 2006: B, D and E Grades start at 9am, while
A and C Grade ride at 10am. Tuesday Twilight racing at Sandown runs until the
end of March, with the Sandown Road gate opening at 6pm for a 6.30pm race start
for all grades.
