Just over 200 riders this week at Sandown, with blue skies and a warm northerly
wind to make things tough for riders around the famous car racing track.
An early break in A Grade by Andy Naylor (Bianchi) and Justin Davis (O'Mara)
wasn't successful, but did cause the bunch to split as plenty of riders were
clearly suffering after Melbourne's four day heat wave. Making the front group
were Darren Young (TIS/cyclingnews.com), Tommy Nankervis and Matt Chessum (Fitzroy
Cycles), James Maebus (Raceline), Brendan Rowbotham (SHM), Warren Knevitt (O'Mara
Cycles), Danny Kah, Adrian Salter (Salter Cycles), Murray Spink (Giant) and
Vaughan Bowman (Le Tour Cycles).
Spink attacked on the penultimate lap, but was reeled in at the start of the
final lap, and the small group stayed largely intact up the final climb. Salter
led out in the dash to the line, but wasn't able to hold off the finishing kick
from Nankervis, with Knevitt not far behind in third.
The huge B Grade bunch made it virtually impossible for breakaways to succeed,
quickly chasing anyone who dared attack, and in the swarm towards the line,
David O'Leary wound things up nicely, allowing his son Jake to power over the
top claim the win that moves him to A Grade from Hampton Cycles team mate Damian
Jones. A clash of handlebars took Josh Morrison (Burnley Finance) down spectacularly,
while further back in the bunch Apryl Eppinger (VIS) hugged the barriers to
flash home ahead of Mary Rogers (Kathy Watt's Personal Training) and Nikki Matthews.
Dutch visitor Harry Nederlandse proved too strong in the C Grade bunch sprint,
taking the win by a few lengths, from David Tennant and Ben Aigner. Leading
the women home was Kerrie Howard (Fitzroy) from Christine Kelly (Terry Hammond
Cycles) and Rebecca Hanning.
Mitchell Gregory and Jason Swackhamer had their final D Grade rides after breaking
away from the pack at two to go and taking the top two places. Gregory pulled
away leading up to the bell and was never threatened, but Swackhamer was clearly
suffering as he entered the home straight at not much more than walking pace,
with the bunch looming very quickly behind him.
At the line, Swackhamer held off fast finishing Michael Vogt by two inches,
with Sam Bullock next home, and Melissa Nicholls the Women's winner.
CCCC's next race is the Karak Classic - the exciting opportunity to race on
part of the Commonwealth Games road course on Sunday January 29. Full details,
including course map, are now up on the Club's website.
With four rounds completed of the Inexa Race Frames Summer Series, Jake O'Leary
holds a single point lead over defending champion Nankervis and Mitchell Gregory.
Coburg's Rebecca Hanning is the leading lady, three points up on Andrea Bishop.
Carnegie Caulfield's twice weekly Criteriums are on Sunday mornings (except
January 29) and Tuesday evenings. Sundays are at Glenvale Crescent (Melways
map 80B2) with new start times for 2006: B, D and E Grades start at 9am, while
A and C Grade ride at 10am. Tuesday Twilight racing at Sandown runs until the
end of March, with the Sandown Road gate opening at 6pm for a 6.30pm race start
for all grades.
All holders of current Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget
to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out
a day license for $20. 2006 licenses are now available at all CCCC events.
For first time competitors and the younger juniors, Tokyo Olympian Mick Hollingsworth
conducts novice racing clinics within the E Grade race at Glenvale Crescent.
