Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Riverland Cycling ClubLoxton, South Australia, January 8, 2006The first road race for 2006 had Riverland Cycling Club members competing in a time/distance handicap race at Loxton. All competitors were to complete 2 laps of the Loxton course with Hamish MacKirdy and visiting Canberra rider David Simpfendorfer opting to ride 3 laps. Conditions were tough, with morning temperatures reaching close to 40 degrees celsius on the road and would play a big part in determining the winner. The race lived up to expectations, with some riders dropping off from their groups quite early as the heat took its toll. But, the group of Angelo Ylia, Peter Weston, Alice Springs rider John Dermody, and Ben Vagnarelli were able to stay together for most of the race, catching the riders in front of them. Behind them MacKirdy and Simpfendorfer were starting to reel in riders on their third lap and were able to form a group with Lee Stevens, Josh Steele and Mick Grey. In the end, Ylia had done enough to win from Dermody (2nd) and John Eshman (3rd). Peter Weston, still recovering from a crash in December, did well to finish fourth closely followed by Simon Woods (5th) and Bob Pankhurst (6th). MacKirdy and Simpfendorfer rode extremely well to finish seventh and ninth respectively out of seventeen riders after riding 22.5 km more than their fellow competitors.
