Bunch sprints across the board at Sandown tonight, with just under 200 riders
taking to the course under clear skies. With a brisk southerly wind blowing,
the long drag down the finishing straight made things tough for breakaway groups,
with few surviving more than a couple of laps.
Leigh De Luca (Jamis) and Dean Johnstone (O'Mara Cycles) kicked off the A Grade
race with an opening lap attack, but the main aggressors in the early stages
were Nick Walker (CBD Cycles), Dom Gatto and Mick Teggelove (Promains) and Darren
Lapthorne (MG-Xpower).
Ballarat's Pat Shaw (VIS/Giant) saved his efforts for later in the hour, and
was clear of the chase at two to go, but wasn't able to hold off the chase.
Gatto tried one last time with a lap and a half to go, and may have been a little
unlucky to have the B Grade bunch sprint fill the gap he had opened on the A
Grade bunch.
Lapthorne was the last to try and deny the sprinters, with an attack at the
crest of the final climb, which saw him lead into the home straight. In a desperately
close finish, Lapthorne was finally overhauled five metres from the line, when
Aaron Salisbury (HLP) and Jamie Kelly (Terry Hammond Cycles) flew past to take
the top two places.
A touch of wheels caused a spectacular pile up on the climb with fifteen minutes
remaining in the B Grade race, and while quite a few riders were involved in
the tangle, most were able to rejoin the race. Footscray veteran Ron Gallagher
was one unable to continue, but could at least take satisfaction from the win
by son Mark, who finished a few lengths clear of the bunch in the dash to the
line.
Alister Jack was next home, with Kim Marshall just holding off a late surge
from Bruce Will and Alister Stuart. Nikki Matthews continued her good form with
a comfortable win in the Women's section over Canadian visitor Alena Radomsky.
Seton Macleod claimed his maiden win with a powerful sprint in the C Grade
race, holding off consistent place getters Simon Frost, Michael Vogt and Brian
Dew, who all rode their last C Grade races for a while!
Kerrie Howard (Fitzroy Cycles) took maximum points in the Women's section, while
Christine Kelly matched husband Jamie's A Grade place with her second place
finish ahead of the Mt Everest bound Fiona Adler.
D Grade saw a determined Neil Choi earn the win which will move him to C Grade after leading out a long way from home and taking two lengths out of the bunch. The battle for second saw Mario Machado get his wheel in front of Bill Upston and Ben Walker, with the girl's race decided by an equally tight tussle. Kerry McCredden (Le Knicks) took the win from Melissa Nicholls and Anni Jensen (Kathy Watt's Personal Training).
In the $7000 Inexa Summer Series, Michael Vogt has opened a handy lead over
Pat Shaw and Adam Wood. Kerrie Howard continues her charge up the leader board
and sits only four points outside the top three.
Carnegie Caulfield's twice weekly Criteriums are on Sunday mornings and Tuesday
evenings. Sundays are at Glenvale Crescent (Melways map 80B2) with new start
times for 2006: B, D and E Grades start at 9am, while A and C Grade ride at
10am. Tuesday Twilight racing at Sandown runs until the end of March, with the
Sandown Road gate opening at 6pm for a 6.30pm race start for all grades.
All holders of current Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget
to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out
a day license for $20. 2006 licenses are now available at all CCCC events.
For first time competitors and the younger juniors, Tokyo Olympian Mick Hollingsworth
conducts novice racing clinics within the E Grade race at Glenvale Crescent.
