At the end of the first lap the 430 bunch of 5 riders had reached the lead and looked to be riding strongly, but by the time the leaders had reached the Schoolhouse Hill climb the scratch riders lead by Alan Adams had caught them. On reaching the top of the climb only 6 riders were left in the lead group. In the final 5km to the finish Carl Simmons tried in vain to break the group up by initiating several breakaway attempts, but these attacks proved to be futile. Approaching the finish Bret Loney led out with 400m to the line with Shane Edwards tucked on his wheel, at the right moment Shane started his final sprint and was able to hold out the fast finishing Alan Adams with Silas Fisher in third, Bret Loney was 4th and Benalla rider Jason Desally was 5th.
