Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Southern versus Eastern Veterans ChallengeBraeside, February 19, 2006, 2006What an interesting day it turned out to be for the Southern Versus Eastern Vets Challenge. The friendly rivalry between the two largest clubs within the VVCC, started back in 1998. There were 205 riders today, but only 197 were racing for the Shield. This is because we only had Southern Members racing in G Grade, so that grade was exempted. But they still enjoyed a good days racing. Morning drizzle Played havoc with A, C & E since they were up first, then it cleared up for B, D, F & G grades. The break down of the grades was A Grade Southern 22 Riders & 11 for Eastern. Jeff Stobie (S) won with Rob Amos (E) 2nd, Simon Bone (E) 3rd & Peter O'Callaghan (S) 4th. B Grade had 29 riders (Southern) & 12 riders (Eastern) with Greg Pauls (S) 1st, Scott Caraher (S) 2nd, David Doyle (S) 3rd, Stephan Szalla (E) 4th & Ron Jocobson (S) 5th. C Grade had 28 riders (Southern) & 14 riders (Eastern) with 5 riders breaking away early in the race, there was one Eastern rider with 4 Southern Riders. One rider couldn't hold the pace & went back to the bunch, Milos Pucar (S) ended up winning. With Dick Naylor (S) 2nd, the sole Eastern rider Ian Gillies 3rd & Ron Chapman (S) 4th. D Grade had 18 riders (Southern) & 10 riders (Eastern), Southern made a clean sweep in this grade with only our riders winning & placing. Scott Robinson 1st, Andrew Rose 2nd, Graham Nankervis 3rd & Don Vance 4th. E Grade had 20 riders (Southern) & 12 riders (Eastern), Colin Speller (S) 1st, John C Wilson (E) 2nd, Jim Black (E) 3rd & Gary Fidelia (S) 4th. Now my grade a few in the bunch wanted Rob & myself to break away, Rob told me he was going to do this at about the 30 minute mark. I also told the others if we got caught in would have to be up to them to win as I wouldn't have anything left & I would be wasted. Sid Dymond from Eastern tried to make a break from the word go, but I & Tim had him covered. I then tried to ride away on the 2nd lap but wasn't warm yet. Tim passed me & Rod & myself sat on the front & I told him not to chase. So Tim got away & I went to the back of the bunch for a couple of laps then made another attack . I put 2 to 300 metres into the bunch & Rob made it across to me, so that was the start of our break together & we had only done 5 laps. We kept a good fast tempo up & caught Tim (who I thought was back in the bunch). So the 3 of us kept the break up until the end, Rob myself did drop Tim at about the 30 minute mark. Rob wanted to go faster on the last lap but I told him to slow down a bit because I was cramping up. We were going to do a dead heat, but Rob Melesecca won by a tire, myself (Pat Ruys) 2nd, Tim Linthorne 3rd. So it was Southern 1, 2, 3 & Clive Wright winning the bunch sprint for Eastern to come in 4th. So in the end it was Southern 47 Points & Eastern 19 Points, we retained the Shield. Well done to all the Southern Guys & Gals who worked as a team & fought well for us retain the shield. Eastern have won the shield 10 times & we've now won it 7 times, lets hope we can keep it for a good number of years. Congratulations to all the place getters special thanks to the Eastern Riders who made the trip over.
