Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Illawarra Cycling ClubHaywards Bay, NSW, February 9, 2006Race one of the Haywards Bay criterium series was held at 5:30pm last Thursday night. The weather was a little questionable at first but it turned out to be near perfect race conditions. There was a good turn out in all three grades. New member Alan Kerr put the pressure on from the start in the C grade race and was promptly joined by Neil Midgley. The pair were quickly chased down by Peter Evans, Megan Wilkie and Adam Hotchkis. Although there were a few other attempts to break away none were successful and it came down to a sprint finish which played right into the hand of Jason Johnson. Johnson won by a bike length from Midgley, Evans, Kerr and Hotchkis. The C grade point score after race one is: Jason Johnson, 13 A large field of thirteen riders competed in the B grade race. There were a few well credentialed riders participating, Leonie Aisbett - NSW female road cyclist of the year, Amiel Cavalier - World junior down hill champion and the evergreen Hans Battaerd. The pace was fast and furious right from the start with Daniel Silveri stretching his legs and the bunch. As soon as one escapee was brought back another would have a go, including Drew Robertson and Joe Pereira. Cavalier found the pace a little quick but he vowed to return the next week with a bigger gear. The decisive move came about three quarters through the race when Aisbett rode off the front of the bunch and was joined shortly by Battaerd. The two worked well together and built up an unassailable lead. Joe Chiaverini tried to bridge the gap in the closing stage of the race but to no avail. Robertson tried to leap across on the last lap but didn't quite make it. Aisbett out sprinted Battaerd, followed by Robertson, Tony Pulo and Pereira. B grade point score after race one is: Leonie Aisbett, 13 The A grade race was certainly a blue ribbon event with the return of Josh Wall from his overseas experience up against the criterium king Tim Morris and former MTB champions Seth Collins and Andy Blair. Collins attacked as son as the starter's flag fell, at the end of the first lap he led by 150m, at the end of the third lap he was back in the bunch. Never one to let complacency set in Danny Hennessy attacked at every opportunity. He had almost a half lap lead at on point only to be hauled back by a big effort from Luke Dale. Two laps later he attacked again. This was the scenario for the whole race, nearly every rider was off the front of the bunch at one point or another only to be chased down by the peleton. The decisive move came with about five laps to go when Wall erupted from the peloton and quickly put 100m into the chasers. Try as they may the peloton were not able to gain on him and he soloed to a well deserved win. Morris just edged out Dale followed by Collins and Hennessy. A grade point score after race one is: Josh Wall, 13 Prize money donated by Winten Property Group, the developers of Haywards Bay, will be paid on next week's race.
