Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Carnegie Caulfield Cycling ClubSandown Raceway, Melbourne, February 7, 2006By Mal Sawford Unusually, all four races at Sandown were decided with bunch sprints, most with breakaways caught in the final laps. Both the A and B Grade fields were over 60, helping push the total entries over 200 once again, with a number of the international women in town for the Geelong World Cup and Tour stretching their legs over the testing Sandown circuit. There was no successful early break in A Grade for once, with last week's winner
Jonathon Clarke (SouthAustralia.com) waiting until late in the hour to go on
the attack. Clarke initially went clear with Danny Kah and MTB star Murray Spink
(Giant), but was reeled in within a lap. Next to break were David Sturt (Giant/Pro-Motion),
Nick Walker 9CBD Cycles), Vaughan Bowman (Le Tour Cycles) and Ross Mueller (Salter
Cycles), who were clear with two laps of the 3.3km circuit to race. Paul Kelly (Burnley Finance) was a little unlucky in the B Grade race, with
his well paced effort doomed when officials sent the bunch 'around again' to
allow the C Grade bunch a clear road to finish. At the bell, Deaflympic Gold
Medallist Reece Van Beek went clear with Boon Chia and Sean Bourke, but the
trio weren't able to hold off the huge bunch. Gary Chamberlain made his first trip to Sandown a winning one, taking the C
Grade bunch sprint ahead of David Watson, Simon Frost and Michael Vogt. Louise
Bourke held off Kerrie Howard and Bernadette Schober in the Women's division. With eight rounds completed of the Inexa Race Frames Summer Series, Dave Watson has moved into the lead on 36 points, just ahead of a trio on 34: Warren Knevitt, Tommy Nankervis and Adam Wood. Carnegie Caulfield's twice weekly Criteriums are on Sunday mornings and Tuesday
evenings. Sundays are at Glenvale Crescent (Melways map 80B2) with new start
times for 2006: B, D and E Grades start at 9am, while A and C Grade ride at
10am. Tuesday Twilight racing at Sandown runs until the end of March, with the
Sandown Road gate opening at 6pm for a 6.30pm race start for all grades.
