A SouthAustralia.com/AIS rider took home the chocolates for the third CCCC race in succession, with former World Junior Team's Pursuit Champion Simon Clarke taking an impressive win to follow on from Jonathon Clarke' two wins at the Karak Classic and Sandown last week.
Ray Turner (Bianchi) twice tried to break the field up early on, and David
Sturt (Pro-Motion Bicycles), Pat Shaw (VIS/Giant) and Brendan Rowbotham (SHM)
were also aggressive. The big field kept all the attacks within sight in the
first half of the race, however, most caught within a couple of laps.
Just past the half way mark, Sturt, Shaw, Taigh Banson (SHM), Nathan Wise (Richmond
Cyclery) and Vaughan Bowman opened a fifty metre advantage, and held their lead
for ten minutes. Just when it looked that the bunch was making progress, Clarke
shot across the gap and lifted the pace to 55kmh: Rowbotham and Danny Kah came
within a few bike lengths of joining him before the revitalised break disappeared
up the road for good.
In the final laps, attacks from Clarke split the lead group, with only Shaw
able to stay with the eventual winner. Next home were Banson and Sturt, with
Bowman and Wise a little further back but still well ahead of the bunch.

Emma Rickards (Univega) joined an early attack in B Grade, and rode aggressively
throughout the race, which eventually came down to a bunch sprint. Rick Jones,
James Shepherdson and Richard Cormick all tried to take a solo win for the Burnley
Finance squad, but the boys are running out of team mates to control the bunch
as they make their way to A Grade one by one!
Alister Stewart took the bunch sprint by a length, with Andrew Curtain (The
Freedom Machine) second, inches ahead of Paul Groves (Croydon Cycleworks). Kirsty
Bortolin (The Freedom Machine) produced a great sprint to take fourth overall,
and lead Rickards and French Time Trial Champion Edwige Pitel home in the Women's
division.
Adam Wood (BikeNOW) capped off a short stay in C Grade with a good win, ahead of Neale Adams, Matt Ditchfield and David Watson. Gemma Goyne was too quick for Tri-Alliance Coaching stable mate Clare Vlahopolous, and Fiona Adler rounded out the top three Women.

Michael Vogt will make the move to C Grade after taking the D Grade win as the bunch split in the final laps. Also forcing the pace and reaping the rewards were Darren Weitening, Gavin Sittampalan (Quick Cycle Coaching) and John Jones, who rounded out the placings. Nat Howard took the Women's win ahead of Nan Jernstrom and Melissa Nicholls.
Carnegie Caulfield Criteriums continue with Tuesday Twilight racing at Sandown
Racecourse. (Melways map 80J6). Racing at Sandown runs until the end of March,
with the Sandown Road gate opening at 6pm for a 6.30pm race start for all grades.
Sunday mornings are at Glenvale Crescent (Melways map 80B2) with new start times
for 2006: B, D and E Grades start at 9am, while A and C Grade ride at 10am.
All holders of current Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget
to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out
a day license for $20. 2006 licenses are now available at all CCCC events.
For first time competitors and the younger juniors, Tokyo Olympian Mick Hollingsworth
conducts novice racing clinics within the E Grade race at Glenvale Crescent.
