Riverland Cycling Club members participated in both a time trial and graded scratch races at Winkie and Glossop on Sunday, with many riders improving in fitness over the past month. Hamish MacKirdy, Gordon Lawton and Aileen Pelly posted excellent time trial results, each improving on their July time trial by about a minute. Glen O'Brien however, tore around the course on his new bike and blitzed his time by nearly three minutes to record a speed of over 30km/hr for the 9.6km course. An exceptionally strong A-Grade line-up for the scratch race ensured and exciting and unpredictable contest. Recording speeds of over 60km/hr along Hunt Road on the last lap, the group tussled to position themselves for the final sprint. Boase found himself leading out the group and MacKirdy took advantage of it to position himself for a successful sprint, just ahead of the rapidly improving Josh Steele. Craig Ward, participating in his first A-Grade scratch race, kept the pressure on and rode well in the bunch, as did Lee Stevens. The B-Grade group soon found a comfortable rhythm and kept up a consistent speed until turning onto Winkie Road on the last lap, when Peter Weston put the throttle down. Peter Evans, Bob "Compag" Pankhurst and Amanda Steele accepted the challenge and sprinted to regroup, and in yet another trademark victory, Pankhurst manoeuvred himself into an excellent position, sprinting across the line ahead of Weston. The C-Grade group initially worked well together on the combined Winkie/Glossop course however fatigue from the time trial soon took its toll, and O'Brien and Pelly broke away from Megan Taylor and Lawton. O'Brien sprinted to an easy victory and can now look forward to a promotion to B-Grade. The Club thanks cycling legend Doug Holly for marshalling both events. Next weekend, riders are travelling to Mildura to participate in a 66km handicapped road race and graded criteriums as support races for the "Tour of the Murray". MacKirdy is participating in the 6-day, 650km event which kicks off in Echuca on Tuesday and the Club wishes him the best of luck.
