Stan Heritage was one of the most successful riders that the Riverland has ever produced, as he claimed the 1936 State Junior Championship title and was chosen to represent Australia at the 1936 and 1940 Olympic Games . In glorious conditions, all riders worked together and most remained in their groupings until the half-way mark. Aileen Pelly, Angelo Ylia, John Eshman, Simon Woods and Bob Pankhurst came together to form a super-group, managing to keep out of sight on the undulating Murtho Road from their closest rivals Peter Weston, Ruth Strout and Amanda Steele. Mick Gray and Josh Steele were soon joined by Angus Boase, who tore up the tarmac and did the majority of work in the group in an effort to claim the fastest time placing ahead of his nemesis, Hamish MacKirdy. The group picked up, and soon left behind, riders in their wake. O'Brien however, was out of reach and crossed the finish line in a time of 1:41:10. In a tight sprint for second, Josh Steele edged out Boase, who claimed third. MacKirdy, in what was great training for his upcoming participation in the Tour of the Murray, claimed fastest time in a solo effort at 1:17:03. Following closely behind MacKirdy was Pelly, who has been improving on her average each week. Pelly sprinted in to claim 9th with an impressive average of 31km/hr over the 50km distance. Kevin Heritage, son of Stan Heritage, presented the placegetters with their trophies after the race. Next week's race will be held at Winkie after individual time trials. Racing will start at 9:15am at the Winkie School. All interested cyclists are invited to attend. The Club wishes to thank Club Patron Toby Bartsch for his continued involvement and the food provided at the recent Loxton race.
