It was finally back to the open road after a block of winter crit racing, and the sun shone on a perfect spring day at the Modella circuit. A welcome addition to the traffic management crew was Peta Mullens, fresh from her bronze medal at the junior world track championships in Ghent, Belgium. A smallish A Grade field rode tempo over the climbs on the first lap, before Matt Chessum (Fitzroy Cycles) and Bill Murray (O’Mara Cycles) threw caution to the wind and jumped away with over a lap of the 40km circuit remaining. They were thirty seconds clear at the base of the climb on the second lap, but on the climb Murray couldn’t hold Chessum’s pace and dropped back to a chase group containing team mate Justin Davis, Paul Logan and Danny Kah. The quartet reeled Chessum in leaving five to contest the finish, with Coburg treasurer Logan proving the fastest as he took the win ahead of Chessum, Davis and Murray. Rick Jones (Burnley Finance) pulled away from the B Grade field both times over the climb, but each time was reeled back by the coordinated chase. Local Warragul fast man Geoff Thompson was too quick at the finish, leading home crit specialist Michael Thomas (aboc Cycle Coaching) and Manuel Lawrence, while Jones had enough left to sprint home fourth. A break of four escaped early in C Grade, with experienced riders Neil Sturt and Steve Brooks (Hampton Cycles) joined by up and coming juniors Sean Carruthers (Terry Hammond Cycles) and Peter Walker. Their margin increased on the second lap with Sturt taking the win ahead of Walker and Carruthers. Kerrie Howard (Fitzroy) took the women’s prize, finishing in the second chase group. Brent Tomlinson found the hills suited him, taking the D Grade win in his first race at Modella. Paul Carnibella was best of the rest, with Dale Reith and Nick Bird (aboc) filling the minor places. Triathlete Stephanie McGrath won the women’s section despite completing a swim session earlier that morning. Racing returns to Casey Fields next Saturday morning hosted by Mornington, followed by a return to Modella for an 80km handicap on September 2. All holders of current Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out a day license for $20.
