Another bumper field at Glenvale Crescent: which was the only show in town as the de-facto four day weekend offered by the Melbourne Cup Day holiday on Tuesday saw other venues take a week off. Weather permitting, CCCC will host races at Glenvale every Sunday until the end of April barring Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Easter Sunday and March 26 - the day of the Commonwealth Games road race.
The A Grade race saw the big hitters in action early, with a threatening break
going clear on the opening lap. A dozen riders, including Leigh De Luca (Jamis),
Doug Garley (Terry Hammond Cycles), Tim Retchford (Melbourne Uni) and Julian
Dutton (BikeNOW) poured the power on and quickly had the chasing bunch strung
out in pursuit. Track star Adrian Sansonetti (BT Bike Technologies) and Deaflympic
Gold Medallist Reece Van Beek kept the break in sight, before a succession of
riders trying to bridge the gap eventually saw the bunch reform at the half
way mark.
Former Aussie Road Champion Robert Tighello (Richmond Cyclery) jumped with the
next big move, which also included Brendan Rowbotham (Fitzroy Cycles), Jason
Pastor and Darren Lapthorn (MG X-Power). Again, it took the bunch close to fifteen
minutes to get back on terms with much of the chase led by Daniel Nelms (Koln)
and Australian Masters Time Trial Champion David Sturt (Giant/Pro-Motion).
In the final minutes, Team Uno pair Leigh Howard and Alex Smyth jumped away
in a repeat of their tactics from the week before. Only a handful of riders
had the freshness to follow, including Richard England (VIS), Darren Young (TIS-Cyclingnews),
Peter Trigar and Sturt. The 'three to go' call came next time past the finish
with the margin at ten seconds, which proved to be more than enough for the
escapees to hold off the frantic chase.
Howard led out the sprint down the left hand side of the road, while Young chose
the right hand gutter. On the line, the Geelong youngster was three lengths
clear of Young, and had England and Trigar on his wheel, with the Tasmanian
fourth ahead of Sturt and Smyth.
A 'mere' 74 riders registered for B grade this week after last week's record
75 - so some-one must have forgotten the daylight savings clock change and slept
in! Will Tehan opened the best gap of the morning midway through the hour, and
stayed clear for around five minutes before succumbing to the relentless chase.
The Burnley Finance squad was ever active, but with designated fast man James
Shepherdson away on paternity leave all their eggs were in the break-away basket
- and all of their late moves were quickly neutralised. The pace came right
off at three to go, and with the bunch ten wide into the corners a crash was
almost inevitable.
Sam Beveridge was the unlucky rider to hit the deck, and the ensuing mess split
the bunch, allowing Will Tehan to sprint home for a clear win ahead of Michael
Downing, Wayne Evans and Jason Theobald (O'Mara Cycles). Briana James (The Freedom
Machine) wove her way through the obstructions to claim the women's win from
Nicole Whitburn (Quick Cycle).
David Downing has developed something of a reputation for long but ultimately
unsuccessful solo breaks early in C Grade races, but saved his efforts for the
closing stages today, only to be reeled in once again by the attentive bunch.
Darren Sayers, Ross Hamilton (CBD Cycles) and Simon Shaw (Nepean Cycles) also
tried solo breaks without success, as did Mick Maine (Kathy Watt's Personal
Training) at three to go, but it was the sprinters who prevailed, with Paul
Groves holding off Wade Edwards by half a wheel, with Bob Kelly best of the
rest.
Louise Bourke (Fortress) proved the quickest sprinter to take out the Women's
section ahead of Gemma Goyne (BikeNOW) and Athena Wilson.
The pace stayed high throughout the D Grade race, with a host of new riders keen to show their stuff. In the final stages, the bunch was still largely intact until a rear wheel slide took Nicole Holt (Le Tour Cycles), Scott Richardson and Heidi Buntrock (Quick Cycle) to the deck, and split the bunch. Mark Seegets powered away at the front of the bunch to claim the win from Chris Clarke and Michael Chiller, with Luke Petrie claiming the final prize. Fiona Adler sprinted to the Women's win ahead of Rebecca Hanning and Malta's Stephania Magri.
Carnegie Caulfield Criteriums continue Sunday mornings are at Glenvale Crescent
(Melways map 80B2). C, D and E Grades start at 9am, while A and B Grade ride
at 10am. Tuesday Twilight racing at Sandown will commence on November 8.
All holders of 2005 or 2006 Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget
to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out
a day license for $20. 2006 licenses are now available at all CCCC events.
For first time competitors and the younger juniors, Tokyo Olympian Mick Hollingsworth
conducts novice racing clinics within the E Grade race at Glenvale Crescent.
