Back to fine weather in Melbourne, and despite the lure of a lazy 210km with 11,000 other riders on Bicycle Victoria's 'Round the Bay in a Day' over 150 riders fronted up at Glenvale Crescent. Unsurprisingly, none of CCCC's Herald Sun Tour riders made it to the start line after a well deserved (and very late) night on the town celebrating stage wins, Simon Gerrans' overall win, Hilton Clarke's Green Jersey and Baden Cooke's birthday!
A Grade saw another early break romp away with the bulk of the prizes, but
a little more resistance from a more attentive chasing bunch. Brendan Rowbotham
(Fitzroy Cycles) and Justin Davis (O'Mara Cycles) bridged to Vaughan Bowman
(Le Tour) and Scott Brown (O'Mara) ten minutes in, with the quartet dangling
ten seconds in front of the bunch. With the gap more or less the same five minutes
later despite some big turns from Julian Dutton (BikeNOW) and Sam Brown (HLP),
David Sturt (Pro-Motion/Giant) and Ballarat rider Damien Turner leapt out of
the bunch and joined the lead group.
The re-enforcements provided the additional impetus the leaders needed for the
break to race out of sight. Brown wasn't able to maintain the higher pace, losing
contact at the half way mark, but the other five had no trouble staying out
of sight and out of mind of the stop and start bunch. Davis, fresh from a pair
of Gold Medals at the Australian Masters Games in Adelaide proved too strong
in the dash to the line, with Turner holding off a late charge from Rowbotham
for second. Paralympic hopeful Michael Gallagher (Hillman) burst from the peleton
in the final two laps to solo home sixth.
The sprinters prevailed in B Grade, with the big bunch able to reel in the constant attacks from Nick Gates (BikeNOW), Rick Reynolds and William Zammitt. New Zealand visitor Simon Pope was too quick, outsprinting the A Grade bound Reynolds and Andrew Dorman. The battle among the speed queens saw Peta Mullens (Giant/VIS) claim another win, ahead of Under 17 star Lisa Friend (Bianchi) and Apryl Eppinger (VIS).
The high speed video came in hand again for the closely fought C Grade finish.
Pete Smith and Haydn Green (Hampton Cycles) will make the jump to B Grade after
taking the top two places, with big David Comport and Bob Kelly just keeping
the unlucky Michael Thomas out of the prize money for the second week in succession.
Nicole Whitburn (Quick Cycle Coaching) took the Women's honours ahead of pocket
rocket Livia Gluchowska (Hampton Cycles) and Geelong youngster Brittany Foster.
Vaughn Allan jumped away from D Grade in the final lap, and entered the home straight with a commanding lead, but his increasingly frequent glances over his shoulder showed that he had spent his bikkies a bit early, and a strong sprint from Manuel Lawrence saw him fly past to take the win. Allan hung on for second, ahead of Paul Kiosoglous, and Ike Collings - with Collings brought down just after the line after a tangle of handlebars.

Carnegie Caulfield Criteriums continue Sunday mornings are at Glenvale Crescent
(Melways map 80B2). C, D and E Grades start at 9am, while A and B Grade ride
at 10am. Tuesday Twilight racing at Sandown will commence on November 8.
All holders of 2005 or 2006 Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget
to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out
a day license for $20. 2006 licenses are now available at all CCCC events.
For first time competitors and the younger juniors, Tokyo Olympian Mick Hollingsworth
