The first 30 degree day of the season brought another good sized field of sun
worshippers to Glenvale Crescent. It may be early in the season but there are
plenty of bronzed Aussies getting around already with tan lines already very
clearly defined!
The A Grade race saw an early attack from Greg Nicholson (Pro-Motion) chased
by Alex Smyth (Team UNO), Danny Kah, Mark Nelson (Giramondo), James Maebus (VIS),
Peter Trigar (Hillman) and new comer David Newton. An apathetic bunch allowed
the group to race away to a fifteen second gap before lifting the pace just
enough for the gap to stabilise.
When the break passed the B Grade bunch for the first time, Maebus and Trigar
picked up the pace enough to put Nelson into difficulties, and by the time the
bunch had passed the B Graders the six remaining breakaway riders were out of
sight. A flurry of moves off the front of the bunch served to string the bunch
out, but weren't enough to pull back time on the six out front, who went on
to lap the field with five minutes of the race remaining.
The six leaders couldn't be separated over the final laps, allowing Newton,
a powerfully built RAAF engineer based at Laverton, to sprint home for the win
ahead of local favourite Smyth, Maebus and Nicholson. World Individual Pursuit
Champion Katie Mactier (Fitzroy Cycles) pinned on a number for the first time
this season and pulled far more then her share in the unsuccessful chase.
A little controversy unfolded in the B Grade race with an early break by Mick
Bailey (Bicycle Superstore), Peter Zvedeniuk and Matt Curnow (The Freedom Machine)
joined by another two riders. Officials ruled the re-inforcements had unfairly
benefited from the A Grade bunch passing to reach the leaders and banished them
back to the bunch, spelling the end of the break.
The final laps were raced at a much higher speed, with a number of riders keen
to make sure they kept the pace high enough to discourage suicide moves up the
inside. All stayed upright as a result, with the bunch sprint well taken by
Russell Collins (Mascot Cycles) from Tom Walker, Michael Downing and Trent Brown.
Helen Kelly, fresh from her ride at the World Road Titles took the Women's division
comfortably, from the unlucky Gemma Kennessy (Richmond Cyclery) who had had
to withdraw from the De Bortoli Tour before the second stage time trial after
locking her keys in the car!
Both C and D Grades saw bunch kicks decide the winners, as the bigger than usual bunches make it much tougher for the breakaway attempts to succeed. A review of the video saw the C Grade win go to Anthony Peacock ahead of a relieved Michael Thomas, who was finally on the podium after a run of fifth place finishes! Danny Weatherley took third from Damien Jones, while Michelle Murrell took the Women's win from a much improved Louisa Judd (Hampton Cycles) and Andrea Bishop.
Graeme Robertson-Smith collected the cash in D Grade, with the minor places to Daryl Beovic, Michael Chiller and Todd Spain. The Women's winner was Claire Vlahopolous, who sprinted clear of Melissa Nichols on the final lap.
Tuesday Twilight racing at Sandown will commence this week (November 8) with
the Sandown Road gate opening at 6pm for a 6.30pm race start for all grades.
Carnegie Caulfield Criteriums continue Sunday mornings at Glenvale Crescent
(Melways map 80B2). C, D and E Grades start at 9am, while A and B Grade ride
at 10am.
All holders of 2005 or 2006 Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget
to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out
a day license for $20. 2006 licenses are now available at all CCCC events.
For first time competitors and the younger juniors, Tokyo Olympian Mick Hollingsworth
conducts novice racing clinics within the E Grade race at Glenvale Crescent.
