'Hell of the West' - Glenmore, Victoria, May 28, 2005

Daniel Doherty (Brunswick) took out the 2005 Hell of the West at Glenmore on Saturday 28 May, 2005. Riding off the 13 minute mark, the 16 year old held a one minute gap at the base of the climb with Ernie Arriagada (St Kilda). This gap on the closing nine minute bunch was enough to see Doherty claim the trophy. Doherty' s climb time from bridge to summit was 8 minutes 35 seconds.

The annual classic has a flat parcours but finishes with the brutal ascent of Glenmore Hill. This climb is only 1.2km but has an average gradient of 13.7%, with it reaching 15.9% at its most difficult point.

Pete Knight from the 9 minute bunch did enough to cross the line in second, 8 seconds behind, with Arriagada fading to finish 9th. Michael Sparke beat William Zammitt (both Brunswick) for the minor placing on the podium. Ian Jenkins (Melton) squeezed past a tired Andrew Gannon (Brunswick) for fifth to round out the podium.

Chris Bradford (Carnegie) took out fastest time honours just short of two minutes behind the winner.

Eighty riders took to the start in windy conditions, the scratch markers giving a 17-minute advantage to the outmarkers. After 30 km this gap was closed to 6 minutes, but the outmarkers at this point enjoyed a tail wind for the next 25 kilometres. Doherty and Arriagada had a 300m lead for the last 10 kilometres and were working well together. The nine minute bunch did not work properly, perhaps savings themselves for the climb. Scratch had caught second scratch shortly after Balliang, but didn't close the gap to the leaders.

Next week is the running of the Preston Open at Broadford, with combine racing given a weeks break prior to the 47th edition of the Eric Hall Queens birthday three day tour.
