Riverland Cycling Club

Cooltong, South Australia, May 15, 2005

Local Riverland Cycling Club members held a road race around a 7km block circuit at Cooltong on Sunday. In what was excellent preparation for the upcoming Tour of the Riverland, the riding was fiercely competitive and fast-paced. The group consisting of Lara MacKirdy, Mick Grey, Peter Weston, John Eshman and Amanda Steele were caught on the second-last lap by Lee Stevens, Hamish MacKirdy and Kel Elleway, forming a bunch that wore down Angelo Ylia and Gordon Lawton with ease.

A breakaway group formed before the final bend, with Stevens scrambling across the line in a 500m sprint against Hamish MacKirdy for first place. MacKirdy claimed the fastest time honours with at an impressive 38km/h average. The next road race will be at Glossop on Sunday 22nd May starting at 9:30am.
