Fortunately, Lidcombe-Auburn Cycle Club (LACC) has managed to negotiate their way through the lengthy and demanding race approval process with Police and local government, and is well into the 2005 road season at their traditional winter home of Horsley Park, in Sydney's west, a short drive out the M4 from our home base in Sydney's Inner West. Almost perfect conditions greeted the riders - 19 degrees and a light but steady SE breeze on Saturday 14th May. New for this year is the sign on and marshalling area, now located in the village, at Horsley Park Community Hall, opposite the pub and coffee shop. A grade riders were first to roll out into the neutral zone, and after 1km the flag was dropped and the racing was on. Almost immediately the first attack was launched with LACC's cycling cartoonist Alex Arias off the front, with David Rae (MF) and David Young (Banks) . These 3 established a handy lead on the undulating 9km course and looked to have the race in their keeping. Young, however dropped off the pace, leaving Arias and Rae to battle it out . With $100 on the line for 1st, there were no prisoners taken, and Arias outsprinted Rae at the end of 5 laps for the win . Carlo Trovato (Par) won the bunch gallop for third B grade (45km) had a strong field. Several attacks were intitiated through the race, but all were brought back and ended up in a bunch finish. Track specialist and visitor Grant Law (Illawarra) got through to win a tricky finish from another visitor, Phil Knowles (Manning Valley), with local legend and LACC's Junior Development Officer Gil Carver rounding out the podium. C grade (36km) was more of a race of attrition. The previously reported light breeze had made its presence felt and those riders in the know were scrambling for cover in the crosswind along the dead surface of Garfield Road. A bunch of eight approached the finish line, with comeback king Kev Garvey proving too strong for ex Texan and Ducati rider Grant Fahey, with Rob Dowdall (Honda CBR1000) nailing third - almost a motorcyclists' race! D grade (27km) was also an attritional race, with one or two groups always chasing the lead bunch. Getting up in this event was another comeback rider Richard Sansom (whose last races were as a junior several years ago) from proud new grandfather Keith Stockall and Warren Potts. With increased prizemoney on offer this season, and strong support from club riders, racing across all grades is sure to be keen and competitive. Next race dates at Horsley Park are 28th May and 11th June on the longer 14km course. Full details on the LACC website www.lidcombe-auburn.cc.
