Riverland Cycling Club

Lindsay Point, South Australia, May 8, 2005

By Amanda Steele

The Riverland Cycling Club held its first trophy race on Sunday, with the Bob Francis Memorial Handicap Road Race conducted on Lindsay Point Road. On an unforgiving 46km course, riders battled to maintain their groupings, with 'hill specialist' John Eshman dropping Peter Weston and Amanda Steele around the half-way mark. Angus Boase was unable to keep with Lee Stevens, both riders toughing it out on the way home against the side wind. Eshman stayed with Kel Elleway for the last quarter of the race, passing Ruth Strout and Angelo Ylia on his way to third place.

But it was Gordon "Pom" Lawton's day, beating Elleway across the line for his second Bob Francis trophy in thirteen years. Elleway easily won the fastest time honours with a 35.5km/hr average. Good luck to Angus Boase who competes in "The Dirty Weekend" event at Cudlee Creek next weekend.
