The average age of competitors dropped substantially on Sunday, as many regulars
were in Lancefield for the Australian Masters Championships, but the turnout
was still healthy on a perfect morning at Glenvale Crescent.
A Grade started surprisingly sedately, with almost fifteen minutes passing before
the first attack of note. Matt Shea (Naughty Boy) kicked things off, along with
Jan Wilhoeft (Jones Cycles) and John Mackenzie (Lloyd Morgan). Their attack
was quickly chased down, but set the stage for a non stop series of attacks.
Brendan Rowbotham (Fitzroy Cycles) had a dip; after him Pete Johnstone (O'Mara
Cycles), Danny Kah and Leigh De Luca tried their luck.
None of the moves stuck, even when Rowbotham tried with team mate and Inexa
Series leader Tommy Nankervis in tow. Aaron Salisbury (HLP/Ridewiser) is Nankervis'
closest challenger and jumped across, but approaching the half way mark the
bunch was once more intact.
Bendigo Madison winner Simon Clarke (VIS) attacked right on thirty minutes,
and soon had Rob Crowe (HLP/Ridewiser), Rowbotham, Nathan Wise (Lloyd Morgan)
and Matt Chessum (Fitzroy) for company. In theory, the break had the horsepower
to wrap things up, but was only able to last ten minutes before the bunch chased
up.
The subsequent counter attack proved to be the longest break of the day, with
German visitor Martin Kethle joined by Paul Richards (Team MG-ZT) and Pat Shaw
(VIS). Combining well, the trio was fifteen seconds clear with ten minutes to
race, before De Luca and Chessum sacrificed their own chances to bring the sprinters
back into contention.
In the dash to the line, Nankervis showed his speed, taking out his tenth win
of the season, ahead of Clarke and Mick Teggelove. Salisbury was well in contention
until he pulled his foot in the dash to the line, recovering well to finish
fourth.
After his maiden win last week, Michael Gallagher was full of confidence, attacking
the large B Grade bunch at every opportunity. Once again, the Burnley Finance/Aqua
Pure boys were attentive, placing Paul Kelly and Richard Cormick in breaks;
unfortunately their tactics have been widely reported and other riders seemed
to be waiting for the Burnley squad to make a move!
Just like the A Grade race, few of the moves lasted more than a lap. Simon Prentice
had a couple of goes late in the hour, while father and son team David and Jake
O'Leary (Terry Hammond Cycles) looked good until a blown tyre sent Jake sliding
off to the first aid tent.
In the end, the sprinters reigned; with Luke Pledger (O'Mara) capitalizing on
a good team effort to take the win ahead of Matt Jensen (Kathy Watt's Personal
Training) and O'Mara lead out man Jason Theobald. Peta Mullens continued her
good form, and is not too to shy to battle for position amongst the B Grade
kamikazes, taking the Women's win ahead of Apryl Eppinger (VIS).
The C Grade win went to Richard Buckingham, who has come into good form over
the last month, while the Women's win went to Tarna Schmidt ahead of Louisa
Judd (Hampton Bicycles). It was a pleasing return to form by the luckless Judd,
who had lost a little confidence after colliding with two cars in one week a
few weeks back.
Newcomer Hayden Green came away with the much sought after first up win in D
Grade, relegating Nick Chilton to his third second placing in the past month!
Kym Petersen (Croydon Cycleworks) led the women in, ahead of Ellie Vandestadt
(Pro-Motion Bicycles).
With a handful of races left, Tommy Nankervis looks like taking out the $7000
Inexa - Team Alex Summer Series. Aaron Salisbury and Wayne Andrew are the only
riders who could mount a challenge, while Andrea Bishop has a clear lead for
the Women's prize.
Tuesday night sees the final Carnegie Caulfield Criterium at Sandown this season;
starting at 6.30pm for all grades, with access to the circuit via Sandown Road
from 6pm. Sunday morning racing is at Glenvale Crescent (Melways map 80B2).
C, D and E Grades start at 9am, while A and B Grade ride at 10am. Please note
there will be no racing on Easter Sunday, but Sunday racing continues till the
end of April.
All holders of 2005 Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget to
bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out
a day license for $20. For first time competitors and the younger juniors, Tokyo
Olympian Mick Hollingsworth conducts novice racing clinics at Glenvale Crescent.
