A north-westerly wind meant the groupings had to rely on teamwork to try to increase their allocated average times in the handicapped 50km race. The first group off the mark of Ruth Stout, Josh Steele and Angelo Ylia averaged 30.5 km/h which was enough for them to stay in the lead and cross the line ahead of the others. Strout showed her endurance power and sped away in the sprint for victory, followed closely by Steele. Hamish MacKirdy and Lee Stevens started the race in the scratch group and managed
to catch most of the riders in front of them on the last of the five laps, which
made for a very exciting dash to the line. Gordon Lawton held his position ahead
of the scratch riders with only metres to spare, with MacKirdy out-sprinting
Stevens to win the fastest time for the race, recording a phenomenal 38.5 km/hr
average speed. Results1 Ruth Strout 2 Josh Steele 3 Angelo Ylia 4 Gordon Lawton 5 Hamish MacKirdy (Fastest time) 6 Lee Stevens 7 Kel Elleway 8 Mick Grey 9 Fiona Jarred 10 Peter Weston 11 Lara MacKirdy Local results 2004 |
