Lidcombe-Auburn Cycling Club

Horsley Park, Sydney, June 11, 2005

By Steve Isaksen

Riders were greeted with more traditional road racing weather last Saturday for Round 4 of Lidcombe-AuburnCC's Western Sydney Road Series at Horsley Park. Showers, 17 degrees and a light breeze were the order of the day. Despite the weather, a good turnout of riders signed on. The rain stopped when racing got underway. The rain, farms and rural roads of West Fairfield added a Flandrian ambience to today's racing, although comparing Horsley Park Village with Brugge might be stretching the bow a little too far!

The flag dropped for the A grade field as they exited the neutral zone. Four laps and 56km of wet and slippery roads to go. The A grade racing this season has been particularly aggressive with Gerard Donaldson (Lidcombe-Auburn) and David Rae (Marcathur) getting away on Lap one in a break which would last more 15km before being brought back by the chasers led by Tom Brook (Parramatta). Several attacks and "mini" breaks were nullified until one finally stuck, and that was a group of four. Donaldson, Rae, Brook and Alex Arias (Lidcombe-Auburn). These four fought out the finish, with Alex Arias outsprinting the others to take the $100 and his second win in the series. Brook and Donaldson completed the podium.

The B grade was also run over 56km in identical conditions (two minutes behind A grade). This event was dominated by a race-long solo break by Glen Evans (Lidcombe-Auburn) who was 15s ahead at end of lap 1 and maximised to about 50sec at the bell. After the Lidcombe-Auburn boys were rolled in the last round, Albert Tallone (Lidcombe-Auburn) was not about to let it happen again, and any attempts to bridge the gap to Evans were snuffed out. This had Peter Harvey (Bankstown) doing most of the work and it wasn't until the end of the 3rd lap that the flying restauranteur from Norton St, Leichhardt, Victor Pacciocco (Lidcombe-Auburn) was able to escape and begin the long chase up to Evans. The gap was tantalisingly close and Victor closed up bit by bit, finally bridging to Glen with 2km to go - a classic move by Victor - catch, rest for a bit, then counter attack saw him pull clear of Evans in the final to take the win - his first. A heroic ride by Glen Evans for second and Tom Carroll (Lidcombe-Auburn) soloed in for third ahead of the by now dormant bunch headed by the ever consistent John Mulligan (Macarthur).

Mid-season re-gradings will be the order after another tough, hard fought race here today, over three laps . Riders just up from D grade, including Katrina Hadrill, Alan Whittle and Lidcombe-Auburn CC President Warren Potts struggled in the early furious pace and were out the back on the first lap. Pressure was being applied by some stronger riders and there were quite a few small breaks which never cemented, but still caused some attrition, even after re-grouping . Prominent riders here were Wayne Crouch, Bruce Wyllie and Grant Fahey (all Lidcombe-Auburn riders) - and some desperate chasers were Joe Zumbo and Rob Dowdall (both Lidcombe-Auburn) - Last start winner Mick Watson (Lidcombe-Auburn) really wound things up in the last few kilometres, and hung on to record an excellent win (and promotion to B grade). Grant Fahey and Bruce Wyllie had a spirited battle for the minor placings with Dowdall and Zumbo fourth & fifth. Some great racing today in C grade

Richard Sansom (Lidcombe-Auburn) recorded his second win of the series in D grade, 28km, in a sprint finish - another rider to be promoted up a grade for next week . The pace on the front (as always) was solid and the attrition was happening after only 7km. Strong riders in the bunch were Sansom, Steve Millar (Cent Coast), Glen Gorman (Marc) and Steve Wickham (Cent Coast) . New Lidcombe-Auburn rider and well performed triathlete, Liz Allan (having only her second cycle race) was also seen at the front, out on the road . At the final however, Sansom was too fast for the others, Millar & Wickham completing the podium just in front of Gorman . Liz Allan was close up in 5th place and took the 1st women prize as well
