Carl Simmons, Alan Adams and Ron Burgess rode from scratch giving a start of 30 minutes to Murray Thompson, Mick Mulquiney and John Harland. John Harland was the first rider over Bluetop Hill, 22km out, but already the middle handicap groups were closing. At the Highlands School turn, with 27km to race, Shayne Kirby and Wayne Klauss had reached the lead and looked to have the race, with the many downhills on the return leg, to their advantage. Also handy to the leaders were John Burgess, Nick Scott, Brett Loney, Aaron Thomas, Don Gee and Rob Ekberg. Carl Simmons was superb on the hills and was looking a chance to catch the leaders at the turn.Kevin Bartlett was enjoying a great tow on Carl's wheel. However Kirby and Klauss led by a big margin and were certain to contest the finish after turning into the final 10km. Klauss unfortunately punctured leaving Shayne Kirby to cruise to an easy win. Andy Garrett outsprinted Carl Simmons to finish second with Simmonds recording fastest time of 1hr 37min, in third place. Nick Scott was fourth, Aaron Thomas fifth and Brett Loney, sixth. Don Gee, John Burgess, Kevin Bartlett and Rob Ekberg completed the top ten placings. Race sponsor Jeff Madex presented the major place-getters with their trophies at the after-race BBQ. Jeff intends this event to be held annually and to be one of the major races on the BSCC calendar. No Club racing during the Queen's Birthday weekend.
